The Sesquilizer

9564 Two Notch Road

Columbia, SC 8.67 Miler

Registration closes: Sun, Nov 15 @ 11:59 PM ET

The Sesquilizer

This is a play on the Tortoise and the Hare, where the various age and gender groups get different start times to equalize the field. The name Sesquilizer is a combination of Sesquicentennial and Equalizer.

The inspiration for this format

Basically this is not a new type of racing but it is seemingly uncommon in SC and NC. Two races that were a source of inspiration - the Dipsea race in California and the Wauhatchie race in Tennessee. And although both these races have gender and age adjustments, they couldn’t be more different in terms of the way they look and feel. And we hope to offer you a unique experience - inspired but unique.

How will it work?

The fastest young men will start last at 9:30am and that is when the race clock starts. However there are 22 start groups total and 21 of them will have already have started in 1 minute intervals. The first group to leave at 9:08am will be women 66 and up and men 74 and up.

If you want to run with a friend, sibling or spouse etc you may do so but you have to run then in the time slot of the later slot.

Will it be the same year after year?

We will evaluate after each event how closely the results match the set timed starts, and then might have to tweak it a bit. It however will not be changed just because of an outlier.

The course

Here are the files of the 8.67 mile course with about 700 feet of vert. The Strava segment for some reason says 800 but it is much closer to 700.

Awards, Swag etc

Awards will be likely top 8 overall. Since the race is age and gender equalized there is no need for separate categories. Plus we will do a fun raffle so please stick around.

Each starter will also get a cool t-shirt without any logos on the back. When you register you get to select your unisex size XS - XL.
