Important Race Update
***Race News***
New Location and date APPROVED: Petal River Park, Petal, MS - November 21, 2026
Race location has been in a state of purgatory since I had to relocate from my original private property location. I have found a location central to most of the race clients and the city is very welcoming to hosting.
Registration is Now fully open. Those that have registered under the Waitlist/Lottery option should have received an invitation to Accept. You may confirm or deny your interest and will be charged and moved to Entrant list at that time.
Petal River Park
Petal River Park is at 784 US-11, Petal, MS 39465. This trail network provides flat-ish (it's a little bumpy but there are no hills), very well-maintained single-track along with some dirt gravel road. Exact course is in development and various routes will explored but a gpx may not be provided due to the race format and the likelihood of having separate day/night routes and wet weather routes. The park is public and open to explore any time. It's generally maintained but there's always some leaves or fallen sticks. I will spend as much time as needed prior to the race to make the trail as nice as possible.
Schedule
Race Day - Saturday Nov 21
~7:00 - 7:45 AM - Arrive, check in, and setup your area.
7:50 AM - Pre-race instructions and rules review
8:00 AM - Start of loop 1
Hourly - If you are continuing your race, you must be in the start corral area at exactly the top of every hour. This is a very strict rule.
8:00 PM - Sunday, Nov 22 - Conclusion of the last loop and mi 150
Course & Format
4.17 miles of wooded, mostly shaded and flat, single-track trail or gravel road. Elevation change is very minimal. There are no hills but it's a little bumpy in spots
Runners will run the 4.167 mile course once each hour. 24 hours will equal 100 miles. The start of each loop will begin at the top of every hour. You must be in the corral at the start of the course and finish the course before the end of the 60 min time limit.
Runners will start and finish each loop every 60 minutes until they are unable to complete the course within the time limit or decide that they are done running. The race continues until there is only one person able to complete a solo victory lap.
A special feature I am including at this race will allow the last person standing to continue running solo (if all other runners have dropped) to achieve 100 miles. As of now, there are a handful or competent veteran runners, so I expect several to achieve the 100 mile mark.
Results & Awards
Although, official Last Man Standing events have only 1 finisher, the last person standing, with all others being DNF, you will receive official ultrasignup results for the mileage you complete. **NO DNFs** will be issued and runners will be ranked according to mileage attained. Every runner finishing at least 1 complete loop of 4.167 miles will receive a finisher medal. This is an excellent way to get your desired mileage with access to your tent and full aid and amenities every 60 minutes. Exact route isn't locked in but there will be a unmanned water/electrolyte/snack table midway through the loop. Any runners attaining 100 miles or more in 24 hours will receive a very nice buckle and the Last Wolf Howling will receive a Alpha Wolf buckle and arguably one of the nicest buckles you've ever earned. These are $130 buckles from Sheriden Buckle Co. Check out their site for a general idea of quality. Buckle design will be shared when they finish production in Nov. I'm jealous I don't get one myself.
Crew Tents
You will be able to setup tents next to the start area as a place to fuel and rest in between laps. Placement near the Start is First Come and exact map designating setup area will be coming closer to race day. There will be a designated tent for solo/uncrewed runners with space to set up your gear and aid. This is great for minimalists and especially those traveling via plane or not wanting to set a tent area. Crewed runners MUST utilize the personal tent/camp area. ONLY UNCREWED runners will be allowed in the uncrewed tent. I've done Last Standing events solo and it's really annoying trying to access your spot or get in a nap when there's a half-dozen crew taking care of your neighbor.
I am almost always a solo/uncrewed runner myself and I want to accommodate those runners as best I can. Of course, I will also give my best to crewed runners also. You just have your own separate space.
Start / Finish Aid Station
I am seeing several of these events not providing aid for runners. WHY NOT?! I'm here to lose the most money I can providing the best race I can. There will be a fully stocked aid station ( and I mean everything I can think of to provide ) and community tent area with tables and chairs and some space for you to setup your personal area. We will serve several meal choices at all times during the race plus a full complement of snacks and beverages. If you are traveling solo/uncrewed and want to rely on the race aid for fueling and rest, then I will have that for you. All registered runners are also welcome to all aid, but will have their own self-provided tent area to setup. I will clarify areas and details in a future pre-race email.
Crews and family should be prepared to provide their own meals and snacks. I can't really enforce this so honor system. It's very likely that I'll offer extra food to crew once the runners have taken theirs. I'm not stingy, I just want to make sure runners eat first.
There will be porto potties on site in a convenient area.
Refunds and Credits
If you wish to receive a refund in the event to cannot or decide not to attend, please utilize the Add Refund Guarantee on the cart summary screen of registration if there's a chance you may decide not to run. Otherwise, cancelations will receive race credit to a future Rougarou Event. Contact me if you need to withdraw. I have no interest in thieving someone's registration. If you fail to show up without notification you won't get a refund or credit.
If some calamity such as severe weather, fire, alien invasion, pandemic prevents the hosting of the race, entrants will receive full credit to a future Rougarou Running event. The race will be held in the rain or heat or cold, but there's always a minute chance of some major catastrophe. Like any race held on city/federal/park property, the host property owner has the right to pause or prevent running if conditions are dangerous.
Rules
Rules and more details will be added as needed. Although this event will have a casual backyard ultra feel, some of the rules of this format are unique to this style event and will be in place to provide fairness to all runners.
Pacers are NOT allowed. Not at any time or any location. Why not? Due to the short course nature and that most runners will be finished by dark, there is no need to be accompanied by a pacer. There will always be another runner very close to you if you fear being alone in the woods. The route will also also for emergency bailouts that you can use to quickly exit back to parking and aid. But using this method means you are finished. Most importantly, myself and volunteers will be counting and tracking runners along the course to verify everyone is honestly completing their loops and pacers or family/friends on course make this difficult or impossible.
Runners CANNOT be crewed or assisted along the course. You are only allowed to receive assistance and aid from another runner and this isn't to be abused as a loophole. They can provide you with nutrition or water or emergency gear in the interest of preserving your health and safety. A crew-person or friend CANNOT meet you along the lap to hand you anything. They cannot chase you down to give you a forgotten item. When you leave the start corral, you must complete the loop with what you have, aside from any help from another runner.
From the time you complete the loop until the start of the next, you are free to do or go wherever you like. Visit the race aid station for snack and meal, your personal tent, the uncrewed-runner tent (only if you're actually uncrewed), the restroom, or your car. Restroom (portos) will be available at any time but only located at the Start/Finish area. I will not deny anyone restroom access. I will detail rules on tent/car access once I have laid out the map. It's not about making anything difficult. It's to prevent cheating by hiding in the potty or you car and skipping loops. This has happened at a major national event.
All dogs must be leashed and are restricted to your personal tent or another crewed tent (if it's ok with that runner), parking lot, or green space away from Start area. When they need to deposit their poo, pick it up or toss it into the woods. You know what to do. I'm not going to chase you down and taze you, but I've been harassed by unrestrained dogs at multiple races. This isn't an anti-dog race, just be courteous and keep them in your own bubble. Be a respectful owner. Do NOT bring them into the start corral or into the shared spaces. Specifically, the aid tent or timing tent. This is an open public park so crew/family/public are welcome and allowed to run, walk and take pets onto trails for recreation. Please avoid the course. Since assistance is not allowed on course, it could be misunderstood if you're doing your fun run on the course. There will be trails available not used in the race and I'll direct you to those if you'd like to explore.
The race director or volunteer captains have the right to enforce or modify rules if special circumstance warrants. Any decisions will be made in the best interest of fairness and safety.
