The Big Kahuna
The Big Kahuna
13.75 Miles | ~3,700' of Vert | One Big Climb. One Big Adventure. One Big Excuse to Skip Leg Day.
Think you've got what it takes to take on the Big Kahuna? There's only one way to find out.
The fun begins at Tanner Park before cruising along the Parleys Trail for about 1.5 miles. Enjoy it. Chat with your buddies. Question why you signed up. Because the warm-up is about to end.
Once you reach the West Grandeur Trailhead, it's game time.
Over the next 2.3 miles, you'll grind your way up more than 3,300 feet of climbing. That's right...the trail basically points straight at the sky. It's steep enough that you'll wonder if your GPS is broken. It's not.
Take a second (or several...we won't judge) to look over your shoulder. The views across the Salt Lake Valley are unreal. On a clear day, you'll see the entire valley stretching to the Great Salt Lake. It's the perfect distraction while your lungs negotiate with your legs.
Eventually—assuming your calves haven't submitted their resignation—you'll reach the summit of Grandeur Peak. Congratulations! The hardest climbing is behind you.
Now it's time to let gravity do some of the work.
Rip down the East Grandeur Trail for 2.6 miles of fast, quad-burning downhill before arriving at your one and only aid station at approximately mile 7. Fill your bottles. Grab some snacks. Thank the volunteers. Maybe apologize for anything you yelled at the mountain on the climb up.
From there, you'll head west along the Pipeline Trail for 3.1 miles of smooth, mostly flat running. It's your chance to find a rhythm, admire the canyon, and convince yourself your legs still work.
Once you reach the Pipeline Overlook, it's all downhill from there—literally. Cruise back to the West Grandeur Trailhead, reconnect with the Parleys Trail, and make your final push to the finish at Tanner Park.
Cross the line, grab some food, collect your finisher medal, and spend the rest of the day telling everyone, "It wasn't that bad."
(You'll know the truth.)
The Big Kahuna isn't just another trail race. It's a Salt Lake classic in the making—a brutally beautiful climb, incredible views, fast descents, and just enough suffering to earn every mile.
Come see if you've got what it takes to on the Big Kahuna.
