About the Event

Enjoy a beautiful morning run (or walk) on a 5-mile loop course around a serene and scenic urban lake. Whether you're training for a Fall/Winter marathon or just want to test your endurance, this 6-hour race is an ideal choice (and a perfect opportunity for those seeking to go beyond the marathon distance for the first time). All paces are welcome!

in addition to the hydration, fuel and encouragement you'll get at the 3 aid stations, you'll be able to leave your own gear/nutrition in a secure area so you can reach for it on each lap.

The race is sponsored by the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team and sanctioned by USATF.

About the Course

For the first 4.5 hours, athletes will traverse a 5-mile loop (asphalt) around the lake, moving in a clockwise direction. At about the 4.5-hour mark, we will open a separate 2-mile out-and-back loop which will be used for the remainder of the race (to ensure that athletes have the best chance of completing as may miles as they can in the time allotted). An athlete's final race result will be the sum of the mileage completed on both loops. For a course map (and more details), see race website.

Features

The course is an asphalt loop circling the lake--mostly flat but with a few gentle hills. Athletes will move in a clockwise direction around the 5-mile perimeter. Pedestrians and bicycles traveling in the opposite direction are required to stay in a separate lane. Three aid stations will offer fuel and encouragement; there are multiple restrooms along the course (4 permanent restrooms at one location plus several portable sani-huts along the course). After 4.5 hours, participants will move to a shorter loop for the duration of the race; this ensures athletes the chance to have as many miles credited as possible. Laps and mileage are counted via chip. Athletes will receive a t-shirt, medal, and certificate of achievement. Awards are given in the Open division (49/under) and in older age groups.

Entry Information

The 2024 race is limited to 60 participants. Please enter early to ensure your spot!

You can enter through UltraSignup or call the Race Director at 619-251-6321 to sign up via phone (with credit card). Alternatively, you can download the printed race entry form and mail it in with a check (see directions on race website).

Entries close on Thursday, Nov. 7 OR whenever the 60-person limit has been reached--whichever comes first.

Aid Stations and Restrooms

The course features three aid stations--one large one with ample food and drinks at the main staging area plus two smaller ones along the course with drinks and simple food items. At the main area, you can keep your own gear, drinks and supplements nearby. There are four permanent restrooms near the entrance to the lake as well as multiple portable toilets on the course. A medical doctor will be on site to address any issues that require non-emergency medical attention. For emergencies, we will call 911. We trust that you can manage your own blister care and minor aches/tiredness.

Transportation and Parking

As Lake Miramar is a popular place for recreation, the Parks Department does not allow special event parking on weekends. Race participants will need to park off-site. But don't let this deter you! There are multiple parking/transportation options nearby and the staging area is only about 1/3 mile from the lake entrance. (See race website for more details. Closer to the day of the race, all registered participants will receive detailed driving and parking instructions via email.)

Race Staging Area

The main staging area for the race is on the dam at the west end of the lake--about 1/3 mile from the entrance to the lake on Scripps Lake Drive. You'll be able to leave your personal gear and nutrition supplies here. Please allow enough time to walk to the staging area and still have time to check in, get your race bib, store your gear, etc. The race begins promptly at 7:00 a.m.
