VALLEY CREST TRAILS IS BACK FOR 2026!
After a year away due to the Los Angeles wildfires, Valley Crest Trail Races returns in 2026. We are grateful to bring this race back to the community and to gather again on one of the most iconic trail routes in Los Angeles.
Hosted by Anytime Runners, LLC and Race Director Sheny Espino, this next edition continues the legacy of a race that has been part of the local running scene for over twenty years.
Come be part of the return of what many know as the Friendliest Race in L.A.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2026
This year’s race will feel different in a meaningful way.
With a new date in mid July, runners should be prepared for a true summer mountain run. The course is fully exposed from start to finish with little to no shade at any point. Temperatures will rise quickly throughout the morning and conditions will likely be hot and dry.
This is not a year to underestimate the course. It will reward runners who are patient, prepared, and willing to adapt to the conditions.
Every participant will receive an official race shirt and finisher medal.
Race Description
The Valley Crest Trail Races, established in 2002, has long been a cornerstone event for runners in Southern California.
Offering both a Half Marathon and a 10K, the race takes place along the historic Dirt Mulholland fire road. The course follows a ridgeline that delivers wide open views in every direction and a surface that is both runnable and challenging.
Runners can expect rolling terrain, steady climbs, and a fast but demanding downhill finish. The exposure to the sun and heat adds a layer of difficulty that makes this course as honest as it is rewarding.
Along the way, runners will pass near the Nike Missile Site overlook, where the views stretch across the San Fernando Valley, surrounding canyons, and out toward the Pacific Ocean.
SUMMER CONDITIONS
This is a mid July race in the Santa Monica Mountains. Heat will be a major factor.
Expect warm temperatures at the start and significantly hotter conditions as the race progresses. The course has no shade and reflects heat from the fire road, which can make it feel even hotter than the actual temperature.
Runners should come prepared with hydration, electrolytes, and a pacing strategy that reflects the conditions. Effort matters more than pace on a day like this.
THE EXPERIENCE
Mulholland’s ridgeline was originally developed in the 1920s to showcase the beauty of the San Fernando Valley. Today it remains one of the most scenic and accessible trail systems in Los Angeles.
Whether you are stepping onto the trails for the first time or returning as a seasoned runner, Valley Crest offers a race that is both welcoming and challenging.
This year especially, it is about showing up prepared, respecting the environment, and supporting each other through a demanding day on the trails.
