After a year away due to the Los Angeles wildfires, Valley Crest Trail Races returns in 2026. We are grateful to bring this race back to the community and gather again on one of the most iconic trail routes in Los Angeles.

Hosted by Anytime Runners, LLC and Race Director Sheny Espino, this next edition continues the legacy of a race that has been part of the local running scene for over twenty years.

Come be part of the return of what many know as the Friendliest Race in L.A.

What to Expect in 2026

  • Mid July summer mountain race

  • Fully exposed course with little to no shade

  • Hot and dry conditions likely

  • Rolling terrain with steady climbs

  • Runnable fire road with a fast but demanding downhill finish

  • Official race shirt and finisher medal for every participant

This is not a year to underestimate the course. It will reward runners who are patient, prepared, and willing to adapt to the conditions.

Half Marathon Relay

This year we’re introducing the first trail relay ever held in the San Fernando Valley. Teams of two runners will take on the half marathon together, trading excitement, strategy, and support along the way.

The course will be split into two legs of roughly equal distance. Each team member runs one leg, handing off at a designated exchange point before cheering their partner to the finish.

  • Team size: Two runners per team

  • Distance: Each runner completes about 6.5 miles

  • Exchange point: Mid-course hand-off on Dirt Mulholland

  • Capacity: Limited to 25 teams (this event will sell out)

This relay is ideal for friends, couples, running partners, or anyone who wants to share the race experience. Spots are limited, so grab a teammate and join us for a new chapter in Valley Crest history.

Course and Conditions

The Valley Crest Trail Races, established in 2002, has long been a cornerstone event for runners in Southern California.

The race takes place along the historic Dirt Mulholland fire road. The course follows a ridgeline with wide open views in every direction and a surface that is both runnable and challenging.

Runners can expect rolling terrain, steady climbs, and a fast but demanding downhill finish. Along the way, runners will pass near the Nike Missile Site overlook, with views across the San Fernando Valley, surrounding canyons, and toward the Pacific Ocean.

Course Difficulty

  • Terrain: Dirt Mulholland fire road

  • Surface: Runnable, rolling, and exposed

  • Shade: Very limited to none

  • Conditions: Hot, dry, exposed summer mountain running

  • Best for: Runners prepared for heat, hills, and open fire road terrain

Summer Conditions

This is a mid July race in the Santa Monica Mountains. Heat will be a major factor. Expect warm temperatures at the start and significantly hotter conditions as the race progresses.

The course has no shade and reflects heat from the fire road, which can make it feel even hotter than the actual temperature. Runners should come prepared with hydration, electrolytes, sun protection, and a smart pacing strategy.

Effort matters more than pace on a day like this.

Course Marking and Safety

The course will be marked to help runners stay on route. Runners should still review the course map before race day and pay attention to signs, ribbons, course markings, and volunteer direction while on course.

Because this is a summer race with exposed conditions, all runners are expected to carry what they need, pace responsibly, and communicate with race staff or volunteers if they are having trouble.
