As there is a great deal of uncertainty regarding how long social distancing may be necessary, we will not be charging anyone's credit card until we get closer to race-day and know for certain that the race will go forward as planned. This means you can register as you would normally and your place in the race will be assured, but we will not charge your card until we have the final go-ahead—at which point we'll invite you into the race. We expect to know more by August or September at the latest, at which point we will update this space and notify all registered runners by email.
THE TOUGHEST 12-HOUR OUT THERE. (BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID.)
This race is tough, and also ridiculously fun. We have both a 12-hour, and a 6-hour option, and registration for 2020's event will open April 11, 2020. The 14th! annual Carkeek 12-(& 6-)Hour will be on Saturday, October 24, 2020!
With gorgeous views of the Sound, varied terrain (rolling trails, steep stairs, a section or two that might generously be called “flat”), and a festive atmosphere, we think this is a race you (and your family, and friends, and well-behaved, leashed dogs) will just keep coming back to—one 1.93-mile (or .54 mile, for the short loop) lap at a time. Run for twelve hours, run for six. Run as few or as many hours as you like!
On top of being HEAPS OF FUN, our races are also low-impact: You won’t find any paper products at Carkeek, and we support local businesses (as much aid as possible will come from the Seattle area). Speaking of aid, we'll have some of the best aid out there. We'll be partnering with local and like-minded businesses to bring you awesome foodstuffs and prizes to help keep you running lap after lap, all day long. We also provide reusable mugs for you to use throughout the day, though if you have a favorite coffee mug, you're of course welcome to bring your own. We also have some BIG and FESTIVELY FUN surprises in the works to help celebrate the 13th annual running of these terrifying loops.
WHAT YOU'RE IN FOR
Carkeek's run on a counter-clockwise, 1.93-mile loop in Seattle's Carkeek Park, with an additional .54-mile loop open once the sun officially rises (to give you more distance options). You're welcome to run as few or as many loops as you like, but here's what to expect on each loop: Steep stairs, rolling trails, gorgeous vistas, loads of single-track, lots of up and lots of down. Each loop contains 436' of vertical gain, so expect to (have fun, yes!, and) be challenged. It's going to hurt, but it's also going to be a blast, we promise. (Maps? We don't need no stinking maps. No, but really. We don't have maps, so if you need one, this might not be the "race" for you. We're old-school over here, and super low-key. We don't sweat the small stuff, so hopefully you don't either!)
Saturday, October 24, 2020. (The weekend before Halloween!) Come run in your costumes! Start & finish beside Puget Sound, in Carkeek Park. For the 12-Hour and 6-hour AM runs, check-in starts at 6:30 AM, which is when gates to the park open, and the run begins at 7 AM. (You'll want/need a headlamp for your first lap or two, and if you're running the 12-hour OR the 6-hour PM, you'll definitely need a headlamp for the last hour or so. Yay, night running! Great practice for longer-distance/overnight races.)
If your'e doing the 6-Hour, you can start at either 7 AM, or at 1 PM. Just be sure to register for which option you want (6-hour AM or 6-hour PM) when you sign up!
If you elect to sleep in for the 6-hour PM, check-in starts at the start/finish a 12:30 PM and the run begins at 1 PM. For all races, expect pre-race announcements just a few minutes before the start. Both the afternoon PM and 12-hour races finish at 7 PM; any laps finished after that time can't be counted toward your day's total. We'll have fantastic and extraordinary prizes for men's and women's 12- & 6-hour winners, and a bevy of random raffle prizes for lots of other runners (and volunteers), too! All participants get finishers "awards" but they aren't going to be your standard ultra prizes, so if you're looking for a metal medal as opposed to a ring-pop medal, this race might not be your cup of (pumpkin-flavored) tea.
COSTUMES ENCOURAGED & REWARDED
In addition to being tough and incredibly scenic, this race is also meant, in its entirety, to be FUN. And, as it's happening on Halloween weekend, we are, as always, encouraging runners (and volunteers!) to bring their Halloween costumes for a lap or two or twenty.
In fact, we'll be offering additional raffle "tickets" and awesome prizes for costumed running, and will be setting aside specific raffle prize drawings for people who rock costumes for at least one of their laps throughout the day. If you want to rock your costume(s) for every single lap for 12 [or 6] hours? We'll support you in that endeavor 100%, and there will be bonus prizes for that, too. There will also be prizes for pets in costumes, and for best overall costume, and best group costume(s). Basically, no one leaves Carkeek empty-handed.
And don't worry: If costumed running isn't really your thing, we promise you'll still love (laughing at people running in costume, yes! and) fall miles at Carkeek with a group of kind, like-minded crazies.
If you want to volunteer to help us count laps with star stickers/stir soup/make coffee/cheer and heckle runners, let us know!
WANT DISCOUNTED RACE REGISTRATION?
Like we've been doing for the past few years, AS A SPECIAL 14th ANNIVERSARY PERK, we're offering a way for you to knock $14 off the registration price of either the 12-hour or the 6-hour.
Just email us at AllTheTrails@Gmail.com and sign up to bring a tasty aid station food and/or drink to share with your fellow runners (we keep these events intentionally small, so we're not talking huge quantities here), and we'll give you a code that'll discount $14 off your race entry when you go to register. We always try to have some of the best aid station food around, and we always try to keep things simple and easily digestible (nuts; wraps; fruist; vegan soup; good sweets, etc.). You can make a local farmer's market stop, and/or grab something you love from Costco/Safeway/your pantry, or you can even bring something homemade!
We'll keep a master list of stuff folks are planning to bring, and might even ask you to bring something specific, so we don't end up with too much of one good thing. And we'll keep offering discounted entry as long as we need more aid station food and/or drinks—BUT PLEASE EMAIL US BEFORE YOU REGISTER if you'd like the discount.
If you don't want to worry about bringing something to share, that's cool, too! Just register as usual and we promise we'll take good care of you.
NEED EVEN MORE INCENTIVE? THIS RACE IS A FUNDRAISER FOR TRAILS!
This race, like Cottontail in the spring, is an Endless Trails fundraiser, so any and all funds that don't go to permitting fees/race costs/awesome aid and prizes will go to our 501(c)3 non-profit to support trail work, trail education, and trail advocacy throughout the Northwest region. We'll be accepting cash and check donations on the day of the event, too, and you'll also have the option to make an additional donation to Endless Trails as you're registering. Every little bit helps, and all of it goes back to good and much-needed work on local and beloved Northwest trails. Thanks for your support!
Local time: 4:19 AM
