Cancelled Event

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

HURL Elkhorn Runners,

We are writing with great disappointment to announce that the HURL Board of Directors decided to officially cancel the 2020 HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs. The decision was difficult, but with the uncertainty of COVID-19, especially considering recently increasing numbers of reported cases in Montana and many other States, the Board felt holding the event is not worth jeopardizing the health of runners, volunteers, event organizers, our partner groups, and the local community. We have worked hard over the past 15 years to build strong relationships with the local Forest Service, Elkhorn Search and Rescue, Capital City Amateur Radio Club, Montana City Volunteer Fire Department, and the Capital Trail Vehicle Association to make this back country run as safe as possible. We can't risk these relationships.

As we advised in March, those of you who paid to register for this event will get a 100% refund of your entry fee, including those who rolled over from 2019. Please be patient with us as we will be mailing refunds via snail mail. Also, if you have moved since you signed up, please let us know your current mailing address.

We hope we will see you at the HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs in 2021, and wish you an adventurous summer.  Thank you, run well, run often, and stay healthy.

Sincerely,

Mike Jacobson, President
Helena Ultra Runners League

John Hallsten, Race Director
2020 HURL Elkhorn Endurance Runs

HURL Elkhorn 53 Mile

THIS IS A TOUGH EVENT. #dareyoutofindatougher50mile #wemeanit Spectacular Montana backcountry, 39 miles of very technical single track trails, 13 miles of primitive/double track jeep road and 1 mile of maintained dirt Forest Service road. Approximately 13,400 feet of elevation gain and maximum elevation of just under 9,000’. Big climbs, big descents, big Montana views. No pavement, just Elkhorn Mountains dirt, rocks, forests, meadows, rocks, a historic ghost town and cemetery, rocks, a mountain lake, cold, clear creeks to splash through, and rocks. We have yet to have a finisher tell us they've run a tougher 50 mile course. This course takes runners into and through roadless, remote, back country, and removes you from the top of the food chain. All trail sections are closed to motorized vehicles, and vehicle access to the primitive road sections is very difficult. You may see Deer, Elk, Moose, Bear, Coyote, Mountain Goat, and other wild critters on race day. They will be watching you. You will encounter bovines. There are 9 well stocked aid stations on the course (unless a bear gets into our supplies), the longest distance between aid stations is 8 miles. All finishers receive a print of Elkhorn Mountain related art, drawn each year by a local runner, and other awards. The HURL Elkhorn experience is your best finisher's award. With your entry fee you also get a pre-race dinner for you and a guest, and a technical T-shirt. Once you finish, we encourage you to hang out in the finish area, enjoy post-race food and drinks, share your race experience other runners, and: Experience real Montana...Leave Civilization Behind.

HURL Elkhorn 52K

Spectacular Montana backcountry, 29.5 miles (47K) on very technical single track trails, 3 miles (5K) of primitive/double track jeep road. No pavement, just Elkhorn Mountains dirt, plenty of rocks, forest, meadows and cold, clear creeks to splash through. Big climbs, big descents, big Montana views. This course takes runners into and through roadless, remote, back country, and removes you from the top of the food chain. All trail sections are closed to motorized vehicles, and vehicle access to the primitive road sections is difficult. Add in approximately 7,900 feet of elevation gain and maximum elevation of 8,000’ and this is one scenic and challenging 50K. You may see Deer, Elk, Moose, Bear, Coyote, Mountain Goat, and other wild critters on race day. They will be watching you. You will encounter bovines. There are 6 well stocked aid stations on the course (unless a bear gets into our supplies), the longest distance between aid stations is 8 miles. All finishers receive a print of Elkhorn Mountain related art, drawn each year by a local runner, and other awards. The HURL Elkhorn experience is your best finisher's award. With your entry fee you also get a pre-race dinner for you and a guest and a technical T-shirt. Once you finish, we encourage you hang out in the finish area, enjoy post-race food and drinks, share your race experience other runners, and: Experience real Montana......Leave Civilization Behind.

HURL Elkhorn 15 Mile

Spectacular Montana scenery on 100% technical single track trail. No pavement, just dirt, rocks, forest, and meadows, along with several creek crossings. This course takes you into and through roadless, remote Montana back country, and may remove you from the top of the food chain. All trail sections are closed to motorized vehicles. Add in approximately 3,300 feet of elevation gain along with maximum elevation of approximately 7,200’ and this scenic and challenging course provides a glimpse of what running a mountain trail ultra is like, only shorter. You may encounter a variety of wild critters on race day. The 50 mile and 50K runners will probably have chased off any elk, but moose and bears can show up anytime, anywhere. You will encounter bovines. There are two aid stations along the course, the longest distance between aid stations is 8 miles. All finishers receive a print of Elkhorn Mountain related art, drawn each year by a local runner. You’ll also get a technical T-shirt with your entry fee. Once you finish we encourage you to hang out in the finish area, enjoy post-race snacks, share your race experience other runners, and cheer in the 50K and 50 mile finishers.
