Cancelled Event

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

We are devastated to share that, despite numerous creative solutions to all of the challenges that 2020 has thrown our way, the permit for the 2020 Kodiak Ultra Marathons has been revoked by San Bernardino National Forest officials as all recreational activity in the National Forest has been cancelled. The San Bernardino National Forest is one of eight national forests closed to ALL activity due to severe fire danger and incredibly limited resources.

The 2020 Kodiak Ultra Marathons scheduled for September 9-13 is cancelled.

As soon as the forest closure was announced, we contacted Marc Stamer, the District Ranger of the San Bernardino National Forest, who also happens to live just down our street. We hopped on our bikes and rode down the street to find out exactly how this closure would impact our race. He opened the door and we knew right away the unfortunate fate of this year’s race. Marc told us that while the closure will be re-evaluated on a daily basis, it is currently planned for at least seven days. This forest has not been closed since the destructive 2007 Butler Fire.

Currently, the El Dorado fire is burning in the neighboring Yucaipa area and is not a threat to the Big Bear Valley. However, Santa Ana winds are predicted to increase in the area. The combination of these strong winds and extremely high temperatures pose severe fire danger. The complete closure of these Southern California National Forests is necessary to get the public off of forest land for their own safety in addition to the safety of our firefighters. This is a monumental fire threat.

For more information, please see the USFS news release here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r5

Runner safety is our number one priority. We are evaluating all options and we are devastated knowing the disappointment and disruption this will cause to our runners. We tried everything to hold the Kodiak this year and we were beyond excited to see you in Big Bear Lake this week. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to navigate this situation. Please continue to check back for updates as more information becomes available.

Your race directors,
Susie Schmelzer & Harald Zundel

2020 RACE - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We will host an elite field for the 100M and Half Marathon races on September 11-12, 2020 in Big Bear Lake, CA. The 100M race will start at 5PM on Friday, September 11 and the Half Marathon will start on Saturday, September 12. The maximum capacity in each race will be up to 80 runners - 40 men and 40 women that meet qualifying standards. There is a prize purse of $22,800 in total, as part of the Spartan Trail World Championship.

In addition to the Elite Race, we will offer an Open Course race, an option for those adventurous runners out there looking to get out and run in a mostly self-supported environment, while racing toward an official finish time. The course will be marked, but there will be no formal aid stations. The ultra distances will require your own crew support. We’re excited to set up this unique format in this unique year.

There are MANY more details that you should review before signing up. Learn more about the Open Course on this page and also the fine details in the RACE MANUAL (ULTRA Version, HALF/10K Version). Please read through this information carefully!

JUNE 22, 2020 - EVENT UPDATE #3 - NEW FORMAT

Dear Kodiak Community,

Thank you very much for your patience while we work on bringing the Kodiak to you in this unusual year. After many discussions with our city and our permitting agencies, we have decided to sidestep the uncertainty of planning a larger scale event and will instead move forward with a modified format this year. We're very excited about this alternate format event and we sincerely hope you will be too. We understand that our plans may not fit with yours, so we have several options for you to choose from.

2020 Kodiak Race Formats

#1 – Open Course – September 9-10 & 13, 2020

CODES TO USE FOR 20% OFF THE OPEN COURSE
100M: OPEN100
50M: OPEN50
50K: OPEN50K
Half Marathon: OPENHALF
10K: OPEN10

The full Kodiak course will be open September 9-11 and September 13 for registered runners in all distances to race in an open format. There will be several different starting time slots to choose from on each of those days. On July 1, you will be able to choose your day and time slot on a first-come, first-served basis. There will not be a mass start or a finish festival this year. The Open Course will be marked. Runners in the Ultra distance races will be required to have at least 1 support crew member to participate. You must be comfortable supporting yourself both with or without your own crew if you choose to run on the Open Course. Pacers will be allowed in the 100M distance as usual at mile 55 and pacers will also be allowed for any race distance anytime you are running in the dark. The ultra distances may also be run over the course of the 3 Open Course days. For example, the 100M race may be run ‘staged’ over 2 or 3 days. Your results will be categorized accordingly.
Many more details about the Open Course format will be published in the coming days, but we wanted to let you know about this option right away so you can start planning. Everyone on the current waitlist can complete their registration on July 1. We will start a new waitlist when we reach capacity.

#2 – Elite Race – September 11-12, 2020

We will host an elite field for the 100M and Half Marathon races on September 11-12, 2020 in Big Bear Lake, CA. The 100M race will start at 5PM on Friday, September 11 and the Half Marathon will start on Saturday, September 12. The maximum capacity in each race will be up to 80 runners - 40 men and 40 women that meet qualifying standards. There is a prize purse of $22,800 in total, as part of the Spartan Trail World Championship. The application period will open June 29 and applications will be accepted starting July 13. Check back on our website for details on the qualifying standard, prize purse breakdown, and to apply. Details will be published shortly.

JUNE 1, 2020 - EVENT UPDATE #2

June 1st has arrived and we are still facing many unknowns regarding events and gathering size restrictions. We have decided not to hold the Kodiak on the original event date of August 14-15, 2020. In our previous update, we said we were considering moving the 2020 Kodiak to September to have a better chance of being able to hold the event. As of today, June 1, we are not able to entirely commit to moving to September due to outstanding permits with different agencies that would be required to move forward with the event. However, we are working hard behind the scenes to get to an answer and we're also working on an alternate race format to offer you a unique 2020 Kodiak given the unusual times we're all experiencing.

We want to be as flexible as possible and offer everyone that is already registered a few options. In addition to the current options below, we'll be adding additional options as our plans come together.

CURRENT OPTIONS

1 - Wait for further information on the status of the event to make a decision about participating in the 2020 Kodiak.
(If you choose this option, the other options below will still be available to you at a later time.)

2 - Defer to 2021 or 2022.
Email us at info@kodiak100.com to process your deferral.

3 - Receive a refund of 85% of your entry fee (not including Ultrasignup fees).
Email us at info@kodiak100.com to process your refund. REFUNDS MUST BE REQUESTED BY JULY 1, 2020.

4 - Donate your 85% refund to the Bear Valley SAR team or Big Bear Trails.
Email us at info@kodiak100.com to process your donation.

We will be in touch again soon with further updates.

Important update due to COVID-19 - PLEASE READ

We have been closely monitoring the situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic and we want to do the best thing we can for our runners, volunteers, and our mountain community of Big Bear Lake. Please read this important update - it's a little long, but we want you to know everything we're planning and how it affects you.

Because of the continued uncertainty due to COVID-19, we are strongly considering postponing the 2020 Kodiak to September 11-12, 2020. Right now, we feel that pushing the race out by approximately one month would give us a much better chance of holding the event. Still, we don't know what the orders and guidelines may be in the future, but we do need to make some decisions that minimize risk for you as a participant and for us as a race organization.

We expect to receive updates on California state and local orders within the next week or so. We plan to decide on the postponement no later than June 1. We will keep everyone informed of any updates, modifications, or changes along the way. If uncertainty still exists 4-6 weeks before the event, we will likely need to make the difficult decision to cancel the event. We want to give everyone enough time to deal with travel plans, time off work, child care, alternate plans, final training, etc.

Please visit our website to read the FULL UPDATE HERE.
