Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hyner Challenge has been postponed. The new date will be Saturday August 29th. If you can join us on the new date, you don't need to do a thing. If you can't make the new date, you have three options. You can choose another PA Trail Dog event in which to run, you can defer your entry to 2021, or you can transfer your bib to a friend or family member. Options will expire April 11th and we'll open up the waitlist on the 12th. Ultrasignup will be sending emails on March 18th. Check your SPAM box in case you don't see one. Thanks for understanding our position with this very odd situation. Happy trails!!!!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have offered three options to our current registered runners in case they can't make the new event date. You can pick a different PA Trail Dog event to run this year, you can defer to 2021, or you transfer your bib to a friend or family member. These options are open until April 11th. After this date, we'll start inviting people off the current waitlist.
Welcome to the 14th annual Hyner View Trail Challenge. For those of you who have taken on the Challenge in the past....Welcome Back!!! For those "newbies" out there....get ready for the ride of your life. The course is set up to challenge each individual both mentally and physically. There are three major climbs and three major descents over a course filled with vistas, stream crossings, and single track paths. The HVTC 25K is part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series and the 50K is part of the PA Triple Crown of Mountain Running.
The HVTC 25K has a cap of 1000 total runners or a deadline date of July 1st....whichever occurs first. The 50K, offered to experienced runners only, is capped at 400 runners and starts at 8am. Runners are expected to traverse the course in 10 hours or less. The 50K is not to be hiked as you'll never finish in time. You must list a qualifying time that shows you can finish in under 10 hours. Please see below for Qualifying Standards. The 25K, open to runners and hikers alike, starts at 9am and has cut-off times in place to ensure a sub 9 hour finish. Hikers must reach the mile 9 aid station by 2:30pm. That is a 1.6 MPH pace which is more than generous.
Parking is across the street at the airfield as usual. There will be no parking at the WCSA clubhouse near the start/finish. Please arrive early on race day to pick up race bag and bib as registration will end at 8:30am in order to get everyone across the street to the start line.
Very important....the course is very remote and there are no parking areas whatsoever out there. And the mountain roads are very narrow. The ONLY accessible aid station is Hyner View State Park at mile 4. Please relay this to family and friends.
50K Qualifying Standards
Qualifying standards are in place to ensure both the safety of the runners as well as the consideration of our volunteers on the course. The Hyner 50K is not an entry level course. It is not intended for everyone to be able to participate. If you're worried about cut-offs, then maybe reconsider this event. There are tons of entry level 50K's out there.
Must show one of the following
1. Must have completed the Hyner 25K course in 4.5 hours or less. Or Hyner 50K in under 10 hours. No exceptions.
2. Any 50K in under 9 hours, or any other 25K in under 4 hours.
3. Any trail half marathon in under 3 hours. Examples--Dam Half, Chief Wetona, Hyner Half, the Raven, and others
4. Boulder Beast or Mega in under 8.5 hours.
5. Any other race that shows you can finish in under 10 hours. Road races DO NOT count. Sorry. They have no relevance to trail running in the PA Wilds.
