Course and Race Info

The Moshannon Rock Hounds are pleased to announce The Allegheny Front Trail Race 50k and Half Marathon will both be in the 2021 King and Queen of the Alleghenies Trail Series!! Info about this series can be found at:

The Allegheny Front Trail was established by Ralph Seeley in 1991. The trail encircles Black Moshannon State Park, traversing 41.75 miles of the Allegheny Plateau, some rocky and rugged, on the way to five mountain trout streams and 11 vistas in the Moshannon State Forest. AFTR takes places just a few minutes drive from Black Moshannon State Park. Event options include the 50K Seneca Run (7 a.m. start), Half Marathon Hemlock Run (9 a.m. start). Race headquarters and START/FINISH is at the Mid-State Regional Airport, Terminal Building, just 3 miles from Black Moshannon State Park, approximately 9 miles east of Philipsburg (451 Airport Road, Philipsburg, PA 16866). Parking for the event and bib pick up is also at this location. If you have an RV or tow-behind camper there is space at the Airport to accomodate these types of vehicles too!

The Seneca 50K Run is a course on the AFT. Note that it is approximately 32.5 miles long. The Seneca Run is 100% trail.

The Hemlock Half Marathon run is a 14-mile, 98% trail, 93% single-track course. Runners start on a ½ mile of airport pavement, then run on dirt/grassy road trail for a ½ mile. Both courses include aid stations/checkpoints and clear route markings


Aid Stations

NOTE: In an effort to be more environmentally friendly and reduce waste the AFTR will NOT be providing cups at aid stations. Runners should be prepared to bring their own "cup". Disrespectful or rude behavior to volunteers will not be tolerated. Any reports to race directors of this type of behavior by ANY runner will result in disqualification.

It is not possible or practical to cater to every racer. If you prefer certain food/drink/aid please bring it with you on race day. Our aid station volunteers will help in any way they can, but are limited by what they have.Aid stations will be stocked with typical race food which could consist of the following:

-M&Ms<br />-Peanuts/Trail Mix
-Swedish Fish/Gummi Savers
-Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Supplements will be provided by Hammer Nutrition. These could include the following:
-Assorted flavor Hammer Gels
-Heed (pre-mixed)
-Endurolyte tabs

14 Mile Course will have 3 aid stations at approximately the following mileage/locations:

3.2 miles (Claymine/Six Mile Run Road)
7 miles (Wolf Rocks Area/Six Mile Run Road)
11 miles (Shirks Road)

50k Course will have 7 aid stations at approximately the following mileage/locations:

5.2 miles (Benner Run Road @ lake spillway)
9 miles (Huckleberry Road)
18 miles (Route 504)
21 miles (Claymine/Six Mile Run Road)
24 miles (Wolf Rocks Area/Six Mile Run Road)
29 miles (Shirks Road)

Cut Off Times

Cut off times will be monitored for both races and will be enforced per the following criteria:

-14 Mile entrants should plan to finish in less than 8 hours (5pm). This is an average pace of 34.2 min/mile.

-50k entrants should plan to finish in less than 10 hours (5pm). This is an average pace of 19.3 min/mile.
-The first cut off will be at the 504 aid station (18 miles) in 5.8 hours.
-The second cut off will be at the Wolf Rocks aid station (24 miles) in 7.7 hours.

Post Race

Lunch and refreshments will be available post race. There will be assorted drinks such as soda, water, and gatorade.

The Airport does not have much outdoor shelter from weather or for seating. There is plenty of room to have a "tailgate style" party afterwards so please feel free to bring your lawn chairs and pop-up tents and enjoy the day and camaraderie with fellow trail friends! Volunteers, directors, emergency personnel, and vendors will be allowed to enter the Airport. Runners and spectators ARE NOT allowed to enter the airport unless it is an absolute emergency.

Black Moshannon State Park will also be in full swing and has a sand beach, swimming area, showers, kayak rentals, and cabin rentals. The Camp Store at the park also has Hershey ice cream if you need a cool treat!
