This section of the Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been! This out and back course is incredibly varied, you will go from running on the sandy beach to being on the grassy bluffs hundreds of feet up while waves crash on the rocks below. Runners will also be graced with trails through dark old growth forest, old sand dunes now covered in trees, and stunning tree tunnels. The trail mostly parallels the ocean, which provides runners with one jaw dropping, camera grabbing view after another, all day long! You are going to be smiling ear to ear, mile after mile.
Both courses are out and back style routes that start and finish in the town of Gold Beach. The courses are mostly single track but they both have 5 miles of running on the shoulder of Highway 101 (broken up into two 2.5 mile sections) and 16 miles of running on the sand, broken up into smaller sections, the longest stretch being approximately 5 miles. Because of all the miles on sand, which can vary from firm to very soft, these courses will be harder and slower than you would think just by looking at the elevation profiles.
The 100K will take place Saturday October 3rd, starting at 6:00 am, and has about 6,650ft of elevation gain.
The 50M will also take place on Saturday October 3rd, starting at 6:00 am, and has about 5,000ft of elevation gain.
These are not easy courses, despite a gentle looking elevation profile. For this reason we decided to offer the same cut off time for both distances. This way runners have the option to choose a 100K with a relatively strict cut off (the winning time in 2018 was 12 hours) or a 50 mile option with a much more generous cut off. We hope this allows runners of all paces to feel confident there is an option for them.
If you are not up for a 100K or 50M, you can check out the Oregon Coast 50K or 30K, the second weekend in October, just a couple hours up the coast. This shorter option will give you similar coastal beauty and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean as well as a fun post race party overlooking the water.
Post Race Festivities
We do not offer finisher medals, but at all Rainshadow Running events, your entry fee gets you free wood-fired pizza and beer at the finish line along with a live bluegrass band (free for runners and their families/friends)! We encourage all runners along with their friends and families to hang around after you finish to eat, drink and cheer on your fellow racers. We have been putting on races since 2006 and we are known for being more than just a race. We provide a welcoming sense of community and the free festivities afterwards offer a safe space to hang out with a bunch of like-minded individuals. Our finish lines are just as festive for the last runner as they are for the winners.
We do not offer refunds on our races and there will be no wait list, however, runners have the option to cancel their registration and receive a credit towards a future race or transfer their bib to another runner. Check out our website (www.rainshadowrunning.com) for more information.
