The 40 is BACK! After many years of the "40" miler shrinking due to the awesome Sisters Trail Alliance creating new trails that have taken us off of roads and on to more singletrack, but losing distance, we've changed the course a bit for 2022 to bring back the full effect. YEAH, BABY!
There will be an extra loop at the top of the first loop near AS 3; you will cross Three Creeks Rd, run about a 6 mile loop, go back to the aid station, and continue on as usual.
I imagine this will add anywhere from 45-90 minutes to times from the past 5-7 years. Note that cutoff times will not change, making for a 10-hr time limit for 40 miles, with a mid-run cutoff at the 20/40 mile split at Wychus Creek of 12:45 at mile 25.
The 40 mile is mostly trail with some dirt road sections. The first quarter is gentle uphill, second quarter is gentle downhill, third quarter starts with a gentle up before a couple of long, 2-mile uphill grinders, and the final quarter is gentle downhill (with some sweet views!), making for a fast finish. Mud is very likely, and snowy sections are possible. The 20 mile is gentle uphill for the first half, and gentle downhill for the second half. Upon reaching the ridge, there are beautiful views of many of the Central Oregon Cascades peaks.
