The 3rd Annual MuleSkinner Endurance Series takes place Oct 16th 2021 next to the Delaware River in Pa. along one of America’s most historic and scenic….and flat… canal towpaths. The races consist of a 26.2 marathon distance, 50K and 50 mile race distances, and new for 2021 is a 100K!!
Completed in 1832, the Delaware Canal stretched from Easton Pa. to Bristol Pa. In its glory days, up to 3,000 mule-powered barges plied the canals at any given time moving coal, lumber, stone and produce up to 35 miles a day. The mules would be cared for by mule drivers or “MuleSkinners” who would walk besides the mules on tow paths next to the canals and feed and water the mules. Fact; Mules were chosen over horses for their stubbornness but also for their intelligence. MuleSkinners knew that unlike a horse, a mule was more likely to pace itself and not overheat or work until exhausted. Hint... hint... runners
The MuleSkinner Endurance Series takes place October 16th in Erwinna, Pa. This year, all races are out and back courses starting at Tinicum Park in Erwinna, Bucks County with aid stations at each turnaround point as well as additional aid stations in between. The new 100K course takes runners north to Easton along the Delaware Canal Towpath then west along the D&L Canal Towpath through the Canal Museum Park and out to the Freemansburg Canal Education Center before turning around and retracing the course back to Tinicum. The 50 Miler is an out and back to the National Canal Museum Park along the Lehigh River in Easton with a short 1.5 mile victory lap back at Tinicum Park. The 50K will be an out and back to the Theodore Roosevelt Rec Area with a short 1 mile victory lap back at Tinicum Park. The Marathon will be an out and back along the Canal Towpath.
Aid stations are spaced approx. 4-7 miles apart and will have water, fruit, cookies, pretzels, water, Gatorade, Coke/Mountain Dew and other standard aid station fare with a few surprise treats thrown in. If Covid protocols are still in place, strict social distancing rules for Aid Station Volunteers will be in place and aid station snacks will be prepackaged only. Drop bags for the 50K, 50M and 100K races will be collected and distributed to the runner's choice of 4 different aid stations.
Muleskinner is a cup free race! Please bring your own water bottle, hydration pack, reusable cup, etc.
Our goal is to leave no evidence of our presence on the course other than our footprints. Please carry all waste with you and drop it off at aid stations.
Porta Pottis will be located at several locations on the course.
If still required by the authorities, all registered runners will receive race COVID19 Mitigation Info a week before the race. Water bottle/cup refills will be hands free as will aid station snack pick-ups. All aid station volunteers will wear either face shields and/or masks. Hand sanitizer will be used by all volunteers at all aid stations.

Supporting local nonprofits who work to preserve the special landscapes that we hold our races in is a key element in all Spirit Trips races. These non-profits' ongoing efforts to preserve and protect the scenic beauty and historic character of the canals and tow paths is commendable and deserving of our support. A portion of all race registration fees will be donated to these organizations and we encourage all participants to do what they’re able to beyond our donations. These organizations are truly worth it.
