Firebird Trail Race is a challenging and wicked fun 13M & 50K race, that runs on donations, positive vibes, and a crushingly technical course in Cumberland, Maine.
Our goal with this race is to celebrate community and accomplish great feats together, cheering each other to the finish, for the first time or the millionth time.
Unlike other races, to compete here you must donate to a non-profit of your choice in addition to paying the low cost registration fee. Instead of some mega race conglomerate taking the profits, we ask that you pay it forward and contribute to a non-profit that aligns with your values. The donation must be made between September 21, 2021 and September 2, 2022, and we must have proof of the donation (a receipt, confirmation letter from the recipient, image of your check) by September 2, 2022 in order to confirm entry. We would appreciate donations of at least $40, with a $20 minimum requirement.

We plan to hold the event in person as envisioned on September 3, 2022, although we will be incorporating a number of safety precautions for volunteers and runners, including a wave start. We will be closely monitoring CDC, local, and state guidelines, and will adjust as necessary, but we feel confident that this event will go forward as planned. It's technical and challenging, with lots of rocks and roots on mostly single track trail. The course is largely on the Cross-Falmouth Trail from Windham, Maine to Falmouth, Maine. The course will be marked with pink ribbon and white chalk. *The 2022 course will vary slightly from 2021, with a new starting area*.
- 13M Course: Starts at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds in Cumberland and runs through Knights Pond Preserve then through Rines Forest and back to the Fairgounds. Map: TBA
- 50K Course: Starts at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds in Cumberland and runs through Knights Pond Preserve then through Rines Forest, Hadlock Forest, Blackstrap Hill Preserve, and Lowell Preserve then doubles back to the Fairgrounds. Map: TBA
The course will be well-marked with orange pin flags, "WRONG WAY" signs, and arrow signs. Three orange pin flags indicate a TURN and arrow signs will be at critical turns. One pin flag and/or pink ribbon, every 1 - 2 minutes of running will indicate that you are ON COURSE.
Tent & RV Camping
Participants may reserve a tent or RV space at the Cumberland Fairgrounds for Friday, September 2nd, 2022. Costs are per tent / RV and are $30 / $45 respectively. You must provide your own camping gear. Reservation deadline is Thursday August 25th, 2022.
Refunds / Cancellations / Dropping
This is a grassroots event benefiting the local trail systems. Accordingly, event management will not issue any refunds associated with this event, under any circumstances. Any residual profits will be donated to a local land trust of the event organizers choosing.
Runners in the 50K may drop down to the lower distance through the morning of the race. Please notify a race director or start line volunteer prior to the start of the race if you plan to drop down to the 13 mile race. Those dropping down to the lower distance will not receive a refund.
Each participant will receive a wood carved Firebird pinion medal and tech shirt. Top male and females will in each race will receive top finisher awards, a six pack of Athletic Brewing beer, and a free pair of Altra running shoes!
50k overall cut off: 9 hours 00 min at 17:20 min / mile pace. More details to come in 2022.
