Hellbender Is Back For 2023!!
Make sure to sign up on the correct registration page (there will be a registration page for males, another registration page for females and another registration for non-binary runners) as during the initial registration period entries will be open to the first 60 female, first 60 male entrants, and first 60 non-binary entrants. The race will be capped at 180 entrants with any remaining spots open for all on Dec. 15, 2023
The Hellbender One Hundred is one of the most scenic hundred milers on the East Coast. This course will take you through a grueling tour of the massive Black Mountains, deep into the valleys below and to the summit of Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain East of the Mississippi. With an elevation change of ~48,000+ ft, runners will experience some of the most challenging and beautiful trails in all of Western North Carolina. You'll not want to miss this premiere, graduate level hundred through the heart of Southern Appalachia!
Male, Female, and Transgender/Non-binary Registration Policy
The Hellbender 100 is limited to 180 participants due to permitting constraints. In an effort to promote inclusion, and equality, registration will open on November 15th, 2022 with three registration pages: one for men, one for women, and one for non-binary. Initially, one third of all available spots (60) will be allocated to women, one third of all available spots(60) will be allocated to men, and one third of available spots(60) will be allocated to non-binary registrants.
Transgender and non-binary runners are encouraged to participate! We will accept every transgender and non-binary runner’s self-declared gender category at registration and no one may challenge a runner’s self-declaration.
If your category has filled and it’s before December 15th, please join the waitlist.
Leftover Spots & Waitlist Policy
On December 15th, 2023 any remaining spots within the men’s, women’s, and non-binary registration categories will open up to all runners. If, by December 15th, there is already a waitlist, additional spots will be selected from the waitlist.
If, on December 15th, there is no waitlist, we will open up remaining spots from all registration categories to all runners! You can register under any category at this time.
If, after December 15th, all 180 spaces are completely filled, please add yourself to the waitlist.
By February 1st, 2023, if any spots have opened up, the Hellbender 100 team will select runners from the waitlist and they will be notified. This will allow runners selected from the waitlist 3 months to prepare for the race.
You will not be charged for entering the waitlist. You will be charged the entry fee only if you accept an invitation from the waitlist.
Runners can receive a 50% refund until December 15th 2023. In the event of an unforeseen situation such as military deployment, pregnancy, death in the family, etc. we will offer a full 100% credit towards next year’s race. Please contact us directly to discuss this option.
Note: Running injuries, weddings, vacations, to name a few are not eligible for refunds or deferrals. Contact us if you have any questions at https://www.run828foundation.org/contact

You must have completed a 100k with 10,000' of vertical gain or a 100-mile event with 14,000' of vertical gain. These need not be a formal race. You can have completed a route with the aforementioned requirements in a non-competitive event, FKT, or adventure run. Be prepared to submit a proof if you are submitting the latter as your qualifier (a Strava link for example). Questions please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
You will have 40 Hours to complete this race. Cutoffs will be enforced at multiple Aid Stations. Those cutoffs will be listed in the Runners Guide.
Due to the unpredictable mountain weather on this course we will require all RUNNERS and PACERS to carry the following gear at ALL times for their safety. This includes: headlamp and red flashing back light (these must be worn during all nighttime sections), back-up light and batteries, weather proof jacket (seam-sealed), emergency bivy (such as a S.O.L. emergency bivy, an emergency blanket does not count), insulating base layer, warm hat and gloves, emergency whistle, calories, and hydration carrier (40oz+). We will be very strict about these gear requirements. We will have mandatory gear checks before race start, and at multiple times during the race. We will reserve the right to pull runners and/or pacers from the course at any time if you are not carrying the required gear.
