Our Events
PEAK Mountain Sports is proud to host the 3rd Annual Rock and Root 30K trail race! This challenging race will again return to the beautiful and famed Haw Ridge Park which offers a year round attraction for mountain bikers, runners and hikers. Named for the rocky spine that dominates the topography of the 780 wooded acres, runners will traverse in and around the park utilizing various trails whose names belie their true character - the likes of "Twister" and "Kaboom" will weave our race around much of the park's shoreline and finally up the grueling Hill of Truth before rapidly descending down toward the start/finish area. All in all, this race has something for all runners: fast parcours, technical footing, beautiful scenery, an incredible trail running community and one of the most accessible multi-use parks in the southeast.
At PEAK Mountain Sports, we strive to incorporate an overall message of sustainability and environmental stewardship into everything we do. In that vein, all of our races are structured in a way that fosters a sense of responsibility for preserving and maintaining the wild places in which we get to race and play. We will always strive to make decisions that minimize unnecessary trash accumulation and encourage our racers to approach their race logistics and post-race experience in a thoughtful way that, hopefully, will carry forward into day to day life. So, come on out to the Rock and Root 30K and experience some of the best trail running in the Southeast!

The Course
The Rock and Root 30K will take place at Haw Ridge Park, in Oak Ridge, TN. A fairly challenging 2 lap course that will consist of twisting “rock and root” trails that traverse in and around the 780 acre park. The course will present several short steep climbs that are complemented by fast winding sections of lake shore trail. 60% of the course runs along the shoreline trails that allow runners to stretch their legs and find a good rhythm.
Overall, though, the course is quite difficult and when combined with the August heat, will challenge even the most experienced trail runners. Nearly half of the climbing done each lap comes courtesy of an absolutely grueling half-mile climb that averages just north of 9% and tops out at over 25%. This climb, known locally as the Hill of Truth, cannot be overstated both in terms of its difficulty and its importance with regards to racing this course. Complete exposure and multiple false summits make an already physically difficult effort mentally strenuous as well. Runners who underestimate this effort will pay a high price and if once up the HOT wasn't enough, you'll get to say hello twice on race day. So, prepare your mind and body for a test of wills. This course will likely not offer a day for personal records but will absolutely give you the opportunity to test your mettle!

The "Cutoff"
To ensure the safety of our runners, we reserve the right to enforce a LAP 1 Cutoff Time. Competitors must complete the first 9.2 mile lap in 2 hrs and 20 min. This is roughly a 15 min / mile pace for your first lap which is completely achievable, but in place to ensure that any racer having a bad day avoids potential heat stress or safety issues by being pulled before the start of lap 2.
Aid Stations / Feed Zones
There will be three aid stations on the course. The start finish area will host the primary aid station equipped with the usual stuff; water, sports drink, gels and fruit. Secondary aid stations will be located on the course primarily providing fluids and gels. Runners are also allowed to place personal coolers in a “feed zone” set up near the end of Lap 1 allowing runners to have friends or family provide them with their chosen sports drink / hydration product.
Please note: In an effort to be good stewards of the environment we will not be providing cups at the aid stations. We require all runners to carry their own form of hydration on the course as temps can sore close to 100F this time of year. Without the means to carry fluids, you will NOT be allowed to start the race. NO EXCEPTIONS.
