Steep Rock Trail Series

Just a little over an hour from the northern suburbs of NYC, in the northwest hills of Connecticut lies one of the best kept secrets in trail running around! If you are ready for a new challenge of some awesome trails, then the NEW Steep Rock Trail Series brought to you by Steep Endurance is for you! In cooperation with the Steep Rock Association, the Steep Rock Trail Series gives runners a chance to experience the idyllic trails of the Steep Rock Preserves in Washington, CT. Each preserve and race offer its own sweeping viewpoints, lush forest singletrack trails and hillsides, babbling brooks and streams, old rail beds, rural landscapes, and of course the ever present New England fall foliage. With each subsequent race, runners will progress from a 10K up to a Half Marathon. Each race will also have a 5K offering for those who are new to trail running or looking for a shorter distance.

Macricostas 10K/5K: Sunday, September 24, 2017
Hidden Valley 15K/5K: Sunday, October 29, 2017
Steep Rock Half Marathon/5K: Sunday, November 5, 2017

About the Event

In the first race of the series, the Macricostas 10K, runners will get to experience the climb up to the summit at Waramaug’s Rock, an outcropping with an amazing viewpoint of Lake Waramaug below. The 10K course is a challenging one, with mostly singletrack trails, two steep climbs, and some amazing technical downhills! It will certainly be a test of your endurance and concentration.

The shorter 5K includes one steep climb plus the rocky technical downhill of the Meeker Trail. Those who love a short, but challenging hike can also find this a great option!

**Runners can sign up for all 3 longer distances (10K, 15K, Half Marathon) OR all 3 shorter distances (5K) at a discounted price for the trail series! Please see registration link above or go to the ultrasignup links below!

Course Description

10K: The first race in the Steep Rock Trail Series, the Macricostas 10K starts at the far northeast corner of the big grassy field. A clockwise quick trip around the southern and western side of the field and then runners are onto to singletrack trail before taking the left turn up the steeper section of the Meeker trail to Waramaug’s Rock, a beautiful outcropping above the tree line overlooking Lake Waramaug below. Take a moment to sink it all in. It’s one of the best views of the entire day! A quick, but partially technical trail down to the June Rd. aid station and you are travelling back towards the huge rock again. Moving back off the pinnacle, runners will go clockwise down the Meeker Trail, a longer, winding, technical single track back to the grassy field and to the opening to the grassy field. Runners will then run clockwise to return to the finish line at the southeast corner of the field. This is not an easy course, but is runnable in most sections and will certainly challenge you!

5K: The 5K course just to the east of the start line and then travels clockwise, with a slight variation (from the 10K course) across the field to the entrance of the Meeker Trail singletrack section. Runners will then make the left turn to go up the steeper section of trail. Upon getting to the lookout point (with an amazing view of the field below), runners will continue straight to connect with the longer, more technical section of the Meeker Trail, travelling clockwise back down to the field. A quick left hand turn onto the field and a it’s a about a half mile to the finish line!
