About MMTR
After 40+ years, several course changes, and thousands of finishers, MMTR still lives up to its reputation of being one of the “best trail races in the East!” The course begins and ends in Montebello, VA at the Montebello Campground. Runners will run the historical MMTR course backwards towards the Mount Pleasant Loop utilizing both old and new trails. The course then meanders southward over various dirt and gravel roads in the National Forest. With the course changes this year, runners will spend more time in the mountains and on single track, with less time on gravel roads. Near Mount Pleasant runners will travel along the Old Hotel Trail following old jeep roads towards Long Mountain Wayside. Leaving Long Mountain aid station, the second half includes dirt & old logging roads as well as several miles of beautiful single track trail. Upon reaching the last aid station at Porters Ridge, runners course downhill for 3.5 miles toward the finish on Rt 56 and Montebello Campground. The entire MMTR course traverses some of the most beautiful areas in the Blue Ridge right around peak fall foliage.
National Geographic Map #789 (Lexington / Blue Ridge Mts.) is the best topographic map for the area..
2024 Updates
Camping: For the first time, site specific camping reservations are available right here on Ultrasignup! This new system allows you the peace of mind to know what campsite you will be in, regardless of when you arrive, and to pay for the site when you register for the race. (Cabin rentals are still handled through the Montebello Campground. Please contact them directly for pricing and availability.)
Training run: Dates: October, 5, 2024. We will be starting at the Montebello Store, 7:00 am. We will be parking behind the US Post Office building. It’s an out-and-back training run with streamers hung at important turns along the course. Most runners will turn around at Forest Valley (18 miles) or Salt Log Gap (20 miles).
Trail work: Dates: October, 26, 2024. Email runmmtr@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with trail work. Volunteers are welcome, please contact the RDs at runmmtr@gmail.com if you’d like to help. Updates will also be posted to the MMTR Instagram page.
Pre/Post Race: We welcome all runners to the pre-race briefing in Montebello, Va if you can attend. We had a great turnout last year, enjoyed pizza, a “speech” from Horton, and the company of fellow ultra-runners. There will be a post-race meal at the finish line for all finishers.
