Joe English Twilight Challenge - Saturday September 30, 2023

Runners of all ages are invited to the Joe English Twilight Challenge. The dusk-into-dark challenge offers a choice of events on a moonlit night. The first and fifth events feature a youth division.

1) A team-relay 6-hour ultra (two or five on a team)
2) A 6-hour ultramarathon (as many 2.62-mile laps as you can do in 6 hours)
3) Marathon (ten 2.62-mile laps)
4) Half marathon (five 2.62-mile laps)
5) 2-lap open run

Expect to experience a unique event featuring festive music, food, and a lighted horse barn serving as “Twilight Central.” Your spectator-friendly hosts, from the Amherst Land Trust and Freestyle Farm LLC, are donating all proceeds to land conservation.

The Twilight Challenge is a nighttime event run mostly in darkness, with the aid of moonlight, signal fires, and glowsticks. The running surface is dirt or grass groomed for runners. Moonrise is early on Saturday, September 30 (7:12 p.m.), so if the night is fair, expect brilliant moonlight on the course.

Again this year, we will have a 2-lap open run, a must-do for sprinters and casual runners to get introduced to the wonders of night running.

NOTICE TO RELAY RUNNERS AND TEAMS: If you are interested in joining a relay team or need a runner to complete your team, send an email to trailchallenge@joe-english.org with your details.

About the Amherst Land Trust Events

The goal of the Amherst Land Trust is to offer a night of distance races to raise funds for the preservation of land for public use. All proceeds from the Joe English Twilight Challenge benefit the Amherst Land Trust. The trust protects rural, scenic, and open-space lands for future generations. Since 1975, as educator and dealmaker, the trust has preserved hundreds of acres of New Hampshire conservation land for public enjoyment.

The Amherst Land Trust was responsible for the development and construction of Joshua’s Park in Amherst and donated the land, playground and community gardens to the Town of Amherst. This $430,000+ project has created community gardens and an amazing playground that will provide enjoyment for future generations. Your participation allows us to engage in other projects to benefit Amherst and surrounding communities in Souhegan Valley.
