Race Description
“Dead of Night” refers to the darkest, quietest part of the night, typically at Midnight. What if there was a race that started at this time, a race that provided you with the ability to run in complete darkness? Well, you’ve found it! Dead of Night 12 Miler will start at Midnight, 12:00 AM. (The start time is listed as 12:01 AM on Ultrasignup.com because the website will not accept 12:00 AM as a response.) However, since it starts at 12, you must complete 12 Miles to be considered an official finisher. This event is the perfect race to break out the headlamp and get some nighttime miles in. Whether you are an experienced ultramarathon runner who has run during the “Dead of Night”, or this is your first time trying to run in the “Dead of Night”, Dead of Night 12 Miler is just for you!
Race Course
The course will consist of two 6-mile loops at Shoal Creek Park. The types of trails at Shoal Creek Park vary from gravel, grass, and dirt trails. The course is mostly flat with minimal elevation change.
All ages are welcome at this event.

Runner Check-In
There is no early runner check-in for this event. Race day check-in will be located at the pavilion near the main parking lot of Shoal Creek Park. There will be plenty of parking and access to restrooms. Runner check-in will be on Friday, January 22, 2027, from 10:30 PM to 11:30 PM.
Make sure you bring your photo ID for positive identification. Runners will receive a race bib number and a custom Dead of Night 12 Miler t-shirt at check-in. A pre-race briefing will take place on Friday, January 22, 2027, at 11:45 PM. The competition will begin at Midnight, 12:00 AM sharp as Saturday, January 23, 2027, begins.
Refunds
We understand things happen in training and in life itself. However, no refunds will be given to any runner for this competition. In the event you can find another runner to take your spot, you can transfer your entry to them. You can also defer your entry to next year’s event. Just email us and we will make sure to get it taken care of.
Gear Consideration
January weather in the greater Birmingham, Alabama generally has an average high of 55 and low of 35. However, this is Alabama weather and could vary significantly so be prepared for any type of weather. This will be a rain or shine event.
Also, you will be running in the “Dead of Night” during the event. So, be sure to bring a headlamp for the course and some extra batteries, if needed.
Awards, Swag
This event is organized by The Running Birds so the swag will be top notch. All runners will receive a custom Dead of Night 12 Miler t-shirt at race check-in. You will also receive a custom Dead of Night finisher’s medal upon completion of the 12-mile course.
The top three male finishers and the top three female finishers will earn custom awards for their hard work and achievement.
Aid Station
We will provide an aid station for all runners during the course. The aid station will be at the start/finish line. Runners will pass the aid station at mile 6 and mile 12. The aid station will consist of water, electrolyte drink, and light snacks. If you need something specific, bring it with you to the event.
First Aid
To ensure participant safety, our medical tent, first aid supplies, and AED are supplied by our partners at First On Scene Consulting LLC.
