Welcome
Enjoy winding national forest singletrack trail through the piñon and mesquite of central New Mexico, a quick 15 min jaunt east of Albuquerque. We'll set you up with free camping, free parking, and an all-night party over Memorial Day weekend! Our course is designed around basecamp: a 24-hour party stocked with hot and cold food, music, heaters, and volunteers to support our runners. We will also offer a quiet sleeping camp area for runners and crew to stake a tent.
Note: There are also multiple national forest campgrounds nearby, so bring the whole fam and let them explore and sightsee while you run! Temps average 50-60 degrees this time of year and the weather is likely to be sunny and clear.
Course
There is no better way to run a supported, or self-supported, hundred miler in New Mexico. Our course is a variety of loops and out-and-backs to give you and your team options and challenges, always returning to basecamp so that you have access to your aid, crew, drop bags, and tent/car.
Some will be a quick mile or two, and others longer, though most of your sections will be closer to a 10k. We are still working with the national forest to confirm exact routes, but as soon as the course is set we will publish it, share GPX files, and email registrants. No section will be longer than 9 miles, so you will never have to carry too much and can always knock off one more section (and then one more, just one more, only one more!).
The terrain is rolling granite foothills nestled between the Sandia and Manzano mountain ranges. There are false flats, true flats, sleep climbs, smooth trail, and at times technical rocky outcroppings. We guesstimate (without having our final routes set) the total vert will be between 10,000-13,000' for the 100 miler. We will also share this information concretely as soon as we are confident in the route.
*100% refund guaranteed if the permit is denied.
Camping & Parking
This event is generously hosted on private land that borders the national forest, so we get to bring the party. Camping is offered Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night only. Bring your tent, and enjoy many amenities, including a fully-stocked 40-hour aid station, a quiet sleep area, or you can circle back to your car after any loop to re-stock, change clothes, etc.
There are several campgrounds as well as dispersed camping nearby over Memorial Day weekend. Check out: https://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/cibola/recreation/camping-cabins
Time Limit & Cutoffs
All events share the same cutoff: midnight Sunday.
100-mile relay and solo: 40 hour time limit, starting 8:00 am Saturday morning (sunrise is at 5:56am)
50-mile solo: 39.5 hour time limit, starting at 8:30 am Saturday morning
Kids' race: 10:00 am Saturday
How you spend your 40 hours is up to you: there are no mid-race cutoffs. All distances must be finished by midnight Sunday to earn a finisher awards.
100 & 50-Mile Solo
Whether you want crew or want to challenge yourself to a long weekend in the woods with new friends, this race is logistically a piece of cake. With the ability to return to your car/camp every 3-9 miles, no cutoffs mid-race (this allows the ability to sleep if you can keep a decent pace: 100 miles in 40 hours is a 24 min/mile average), and a central basecamp, you will have all of the resources and encouragement you need to keep going. The rest is up to you.
-Drop bags are allowed at basecamp.
-Pacers are allowed starting at sunset (about 8pm). Pacers MUST get a pacer bib and check-in with staff (including sign a waiver) at our registration table, which can be done at bib pickup or at any point during the event. For safety, no one is allowed on course who has not signed in with us.
-We will serve a variety of hot food, cold food, electrolyte mix, etc. You will receive a 100 mile race packet via email with additional details.
Packet Pickup
Friday night packet pickup will be available from 3-8pm at race start/finish. Race morning pickup available 6:00-am-7:00am. 100-mile solo and relay starts at 8:00am, and the 50-mile solo will begin at 8:30am. Kids race starts at 10:00am. Pacer bib pickup will be available throughout the event.
Legend of the Cheii
These mountains are riddled with cheii (pronounced "chay"), the native horned lizards of New Mexico. They will catch the corner of your eye like a little leaf scurrying away, and when you stop to look closer you will see an adorable grumpy lizard staring back, sometimes no bigger than a dime.
As told to us by a local Diné (Navajo) woman, the cheii is the grandfather of the earth. When you are lucky enough to find one, you must thank the grandfather and hold him to your chest. Then, sprinkle him with corn pollen as an offering and set him free. In this way, you may continue on your journey in good health, appreciation, and harmony with the world.
Relay Rules
1. Teams can be 2-4 runners. The cost of a team to register is $150 per runner before March 1st.
2. The sections will be run in the same order for all teams and 100-mile solo runners. However, who runs what sections (and how many sections) is completely up to you.
3. Your team must all run the final mile TOGETHER (every registered participant) and return to basecamp before the 40-hour cutoff to earn a finisher award.
4. Pacers are not allowed for relay teams.
5. Each team must provide a name and bring their own 'baton' (ex. "Scrambled Legs" hands off a spatula).
6. Teams may have additional crew members who are not running, but they may not eat/drink at the aid station unless they help volunteer for a couple hours.
7. Relay teams are also subject to general course rules (besides pacing; please see below).
8. If a individual runner drops, the team is responsible for completing the 100 miles regardless amongst the remaining runners to be eligible for official finish and awards. 9. The final section is a one-mile loop, and we highly recommend and encourage your entire team to complete the last loop TOGETHER!
Race Rules
1. Pacers are allowed starting sunset on Saturday (one pacer at a time).
2. Only ONE vehicle per team/solo runner.
3. No campers/trailers allowed (for space).
4. Bib transfers must be completed through UltraSignup no later than 5/20/25. Email avidyarunning@gmail.com for help.
5. 100-milers may drop down to the 50-mile mid-event, though they will forfeit placement awards and only receive a finisher award regardless of finish time.
6. Leave the trail better than you found it. No littering (trail or basecamp).
7. Only registered participants may run; runners will be verified and check in and out for each section at basecamp.
Awards
100-mile solos get a buckle. A big, nice one. Photos coming as available! We are still designing.
100-mile relay teams get handcrafted finisher awards for each runner.
50-mile solos receive handcrafted finisher awards.
We are currently working with a local artist in Tijeras to curate unique metal lizard trophies, so stay tuned and check our Avidya Running facebook and/or Instagram for reveals as prototypes pop up. Don't worry, they'll be cool.
Kids' Race!
This is a family weekend, so we want to host a non-competitive 2-miler out-and-back kids run! They'll get bibs, a prize, and a snack. A "kid" is ages 12 and under in this case, and you are welcome to run with your kid too!
Registration: you can add a child at check-out as a free add on, or you can email avidyarunning@gmail.com to register your child. We will have a mandatory waiver of liability at registration for parents.
