Description
The Lazy A Backyard Ultra is a unique endurance running event with a simple yet challenging format. The goal is to run as many laps as possible until only one runner remains. This event is inspired by Lazarus Lake, for more information on backyard ultras check out his website https://backyardultra.com/. Here are the key rules:
Lap Distance:
-Each lap is 4.167 miles (6.706 kilometers).
-A completed lap is denoted as 1 Yard.
-This distance ensures that running 24 laps in 24 hours equals 100 miles.
Time Limit per Lap:
-Runners must complete each lap within one hour.
-Any remaining time within the hour can be used to rest, eat, hydrate, or prepare for the next lap.
Start of Each Lap:
-Laps begin every hour on the hour. Runners who fail to start at the exact time are eliminated.
Continuation:
-The race continues until there is only one runner left who completes one more lap than all others.
-If no runner completes an additional lap beyond the others, there is no winner.
No Pacing or Assistance on Course:
-Runners must complete laps without personal aid (common aid stations are provided).
-Crew support will only be allowed between laps at the start/finish area.
Course Rules:
- Runners are responsible for monitoring their hydration and should carry a handheld or hydration vest as appropriate for weather conditions.
- Runners must wear a reflective/light vest and carry a light or headlamp after dark.
-Course is on public roadways so be aware of cars and run on the left.
Elimination:
-Failing to finish a lap within the hour results in elimination.
-Runners who quit voluntarily or miss the start of a lap are also eliminated.
Winner:
-The last runner standing must complete their final lap solo to be declared the winner.
-All others technically receive a DNF ("Did Not Finish") designation, however, a DNF will NOT go on your record, instead it will show the total miles accumulated.
Safety:
-Runners are responsible for monitoring their physical condition, hydration level, and fueling. Organizers may intervene if a runner is deemed unfit to continue.
Swag
-All participants will receive a bib and custom Lazy A medallion denoting their Yards completed.
-Winners: Awarded to 1st place male, female, and non-binary finishers will include free entry into next year’s race as well as a Lazy A railroad spike knife.
