Description
This race takes place within the city limits of Philadelphia, and therefore qualifies as an urban ultramarathon, but you will not find things like traffic, noise, bad air quality & concrete buildings here.
Every year 600+ runners toe the starting line.
This race course is located within Pennypack Park, a hidden gem within Philadelphia's Fairmont park system. The park stretches along Pennypack creek and is home to many trails, huge old trees, birds & other wildlife. I run here all the time, and never get tired of it.
This race offers a perfect opportunity for runners to enter the exciting world of trail (ultra)
running . We accomplish this by providing a course that is well marked & not too technical. The course features different surfaces. Some soft and occasional sandy spots along the creek, a lot of smooth single track as well as some wider flat gravel trail. Every loop includes about 1 mile of paved bike trail. There is some elevation, but the climbs are short. This course is very run-able and easy by trail running standards, which as experienced runners will know, can make it even more challenging, because it will not give you many opportunities where you can/should hike.
Start Location:
In 2025 we should be able to start at our usual location on Pine Road, if construction is finished by then. We will update this page, once construction has finished.
Construction on Pine Road will start on April 1st 2024 , and we will relocate the start of the race to the Ed Kelly Amphitheater for the 2024 edition.
The Ed Kelly Amphitheater is located at Pennypack Park, Corner of Welsh Road and Cresco Ave, Philadelphia, PA
The course remains about 95% the same, however we will run the majority of the course in reverse. It should be fun. There is a wide open meadow by the amphitheater, so you still can setup your tent and bring your friends to hang out at the start finish.

Awards:
Winner overall male and female
will receive an authentic German cuckoo clock.
Top 3 in age groups: 29 & under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and winner 60+
These unique awards come from the Black Forest of Germany. They are German weather houses. They can predict future weather pretty much as reliable as "Glen Hurrican Schwarz" . Here is how they work: There is a gut string inside which reacts to all changes in air humidity. Depending on weather the air is dry or humid, the gut string changes it's position and twists more or less, so that the female turns outside when it is dry (predicting nice weather) and the male, when it is humid. We will go 3 deep for 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and winner 60+ .
Time Limit:
12 hours & 30 min (for the 50M). This is a firm time limit. The park closes at 9 PM, and we need to be all cleared out by then. You have to start your final loop no later than 4PM, otherwise you can not continue.
Weather:
The average temp at the start is in the 50ies. Average high 70. The course is mostly shaded.
Course:
Along Pennypack Creek within the limits of Pennypack park. Course is basically a figure 8 consisting of mostly single track trail and a short paved bike path section. One loop is 25K. 50 K runners will run it twice, 50 mile runners will run the main loop 3 times and an extra 1 mile dog leg section during each loop (well marked). This is a wonderful park setting, with gorgeous views of the creek, wildlife and nature within the city limits of Philadelphia
Post Race Party:
Many runners bring popup tents, camping chairs & blankets to spend the afternoon at the finish line to cheer for other runners. Uberhans, Americas toughest accordion player and former Seattle Seahawks kicker will entertain you at the finish line area and 2 professional chefs will pamper you with delicious post race food.
