The Madness Description

PARK ENTRANCE FEE INCLUDED IN PRICE! The McKay Hollow Madness Trail Run is a 25ish kilometers (15.5ish miles) of mostly single track trail. There is also a 12ish kilometer (7ish miles) run. Depending on the distance you choose, you'll experience the "madness" of some of the most notorious sections of the Sinks, Panther Knob, Stone Cuts, Mountain Mist, Goat, Warpath Ridge, McKay Hollow, Arrowhead and Natural Well trails. This is a technical race with several difficult climbs and descents. There will be TWO aid stations for the 25K and ONE for the 12K: the first at O'Shaughnessy Point (~5.1 miles) and the other at the South Monte Sano Trailhead off of Monte Sano Blvd (~9.8 miles).

The 25K and 12K will start at the same location. This year both distances will go down into the "madness" that is McKay Hollow. At about 6.5 miles, the 25Kers continue left while the 12Kers will trun right to climb out of McKay Hollow on the (in)famous trail section affectionally known as "Death Trail" to the finish.

In the event of rain, prepare yourself for an awesome time in the mud and water. My fondest memories of this race is when the water is flowing.

Warning! This ain't no Warrior Dash or Tough Mudder...This is the McKay Hollow Madness.

Time Limits : For your own safety and respect for the volunteers, there will be STRICT CUTOFF TIMES SET AT BOTH AID STATIONS (1h 45m to Aid Station #1 and 3h 15m to Aid Station #2). IF YOU ARRIVE AT EITHER AID STATION AFTER THE POSTED CUTOFF TIME YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE. THE FINAL FINISH CUTOFF TIME WILL BE 5 HOURS.

Medical & Aid: Medical assistance will be provided by H.E.M.S.I. There will be TWO aid stations (consult course map) at ~5.1 miles and ~9.8 miles. THIS IS A CUPLESS RACE. You are required to you carry a handheld bottle or a water pouch with you the entire run. In addition, be advised that due to COVID no food items will be provided at the TWO Aid Stations. So, if you have any particular caloric needs, you need to remember to pack it in and out.

The finish line will be well stocked with food, water, soda.

COVID Procedures

The Huntsville Track Club is committed to the safety. We are following the guidelines of the CDC and monitoring the situation in our community. Below are the rules to be followed at the McKay Hollow Madness Trail Run to minimize the threat of COVID before, during and after the run:

For participants:
Do not participate if you are feeling sick, have a fever, or if you have been in contact with COVID within the past 10 days
Do not participate if you have tested positive for COVID and it has NOT been:
10 days since symptoms first appeared or
24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications or
Other symptoms of COVID are NOT improving (e.g. loss of taste, smell etc)
Persons from high risk groups for COVID complications should consult their physician before participating
Always maintain social distancing guidelines
Do not engage in traditional forms of physical contact (handshakes, etc)
Do not engage in close group pictures/selfies.
Do not spit or snot rocket. If you must, step off the trail.
Do not share personal items, hydration, gels, towels, etc.
Participants must wear a face covering while not running (start, aid stations and finish)
Participants must carry their own bottles/packs
Participants whose actions do not meet expectations, and/or are creating risk for themselves or others, will be disqualified and asked to leave immediately.
If, after the Madness, you should test positive within 10 days, please notify the RD.

Race Start:
Both distances use a “wave” start. To reduce interactions on the course, the waves will be seeded by the runners’ Ultrasignup Ranking with faster runners starting in the earlier waves and slower runners in the later waves. Runners with no Ultrasignup Ranking will be seeded last.
25K distance will begin at 7AM and have waves of 20 runners starting every 5 minutes until all runners have begun
12K distance will begin at 8AM and have waves of 20 runners starting every 5 minutes until all runners have begun
Runners will be 6 feet apart while in starting area
Chip timing should be used to allow for wave start and timing management

Aid stations shall be minimal:
Bottled water and Gatorade only
There will be NO food items
Aid stations will be self-service with water and Gatorade spaced out to avoid crowding in one area
If you require any special hydration/food, you must carry it yourself!

Post run activities:
There will be no post run beer this year.
Runners are shall not linger at the race location.
Finishers awards and finish line food shall be managed in a socially distanced “checkout line” fashion.
Once runners receive their post run award and food, they shall leave the site. **No second trips to the food line**
Results will be posted online.
