Harriman 8.1mi (Tall) • 25K (Grande) • 50K (Venti)
Welcome to the Harriman Trail Races! We are excited to continue this cherished event under the leadership of new race directors, bringing fresh energy while honoring the traditions that have made Harriman a favorite among trail runners. Entering its 10th year, the Harriman Trail Races invite runners of all backgrounds to be part of this next exciting chapter.
The Harriman Trail Races are designed for runners of all experience levels—from seasoned ultra-athletes to first-time participants. This event is curated to support your success, including course design, race distances, aid station offerings and post-race food, beverages, awards & recognition.
To preserve the uncrowded wilderness and historic character unique to Harriman State Park, runner participation is limited. This ensures an immersive trail experience with sweeping views of the Teton Range in the distance.
We are confident that Harriman will deliver a memorable and rewarding race experience—one that stands out in your trail running journey and keeps you coming back year after year.
We hope to add our race to ITUS & ITS for 2026, giving runners the opportunity to earn points and elevate their standing within the regional ultra-running community. Update to follow.
We look forward to seeing you at the start and finish line next August!
Cheers from your new Race Directors,
Sylvia, Jackie, Kristen & Jodi
Introduction
Welcome to the Harriman Trail Race page. 2026 will be the 10th year of this event and we hope you will join us.
The Harriman Trail Races will continue under new Race Directors. We are honored to carry-on the Harriman tradition started by Jim back in 2017. Registration, course, award, & food updates will be posted as we confirm these all-important items. Prepare yourself for a mid-August race near Island Park, ID.
Course
The courses for all three distances are in a word, beautiful. Wildlife may abound, as you run through forest and meadows, on gravel, two-tracks and pine needle covered single track with stunning views of the Teton Mountains as well as the local valley.
The entire course is 25K in length, the 8.1 mile race will take a shortcut back to the finish, and the 50K is twice around the course.
Minor course reroutes for 2026 will make the on-course aid station easier to access for volunteers and runners. A course direction change will hopefully help runners manage the open meadow sections and lesson the sun/ heat impact.
Aid Stations
Nothing has been spared in bringing you the finest in aid station fare. There is one on-course aid station that you will access multiple times during your journey, plus a station at the start/finish line. The food selection is standard aid fare, including cookies, chips, soda, candy, pickles, water, sports drink, etc. Aid station personnel will be at your beck and call.. The 8.1 mile runners will visit this aid station one time, the 25K runners will visit twice, and the 50K runners will have the privilege of visiting four times.
Lodging
Please note that there are no camping facilities inside the park. Yurts and park buildings are available to rent. Visit the parks website for details. https://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/state-park/harriman-state-park/
There are several forest service campgrounds in the area plus dispersed camping is available. Check out www.recreation.gov for the best campgrounds around Ashton & Island Park, ID or the Caribou-Targhee National Forest website.
Additionally, hotels/motels and nightly rentals can be found from West Yellowstone, MT to Island Park, ID to Ashton, ID from 5 to 45 min from the park.
Check In
Exact times TBD for 2026. Plan for late Friday afternoon into evening & early Saturday morning.
Race Festivities
We have reserved the “Boy’s House” for your post race dining and relaxation. This building overlooks the river and has a nice area for congratulating runners as they cross the finish line.
Once you have completed your beautiful journey, join your fellow travelers on the lawn overlooking the Henry’s Fork River for a meal and beverages. Cheer on the runners as they finish, bring a fly rod and fish the river, or just hang out.
They Boy's house will also serve as the Start Line and drop bag location.
Rules/Advice
As well-mannered trail runners, it is expected that you will follow the standard protocols regarding trail racing. This will include not disposing of your trash on the ground, not cheating or cutting the course, being very polite to the aid station personnel, other runners, other visitors, and park personnel. You may encounter mountain bikers and horseback riders. Horses have the right of way. If you veer off course, you will need to return to where you left the course and then resume your race. If you just elect to come back to the start, you will be credited with a DNF.
NO DOGS allowed in Harriman State Park, except in the parking areas. Please leave your 4-legged friends at home. They are not allowed to run with you.
ADVICE: Mid-August temps the last few years have reached the high-80's. Underestimating the sun & heat leads to dehydration and cramping. Many participants struggle on lap 2 of the 50k from not consuming enough water and electrolytes. The henry's Fork is accessible for a quick dunk by the bridge.
Course Marking
Course markings will consist of flour arrows raised from free-range wheat, directional signs mounted on sustainably raised, non-GMO fir or pine grade stakes, and ribbons made from environmentally friendly, organic, recycled plastic (I think).
Refunds and Rollovers
Here is the policy
I will refund your entry fee PROVIDED the race is full and there is someone on the wait list to take your spot.
This refund is available up to approximately 30 days prior to the race.
If the race is not full, then there is no refund. Within 30 days there is no refund available.
How do you get a refund? Just send me a note through the website contact page.
Rollovers
There are no rollovers for any Buffalo Run Adventures races.
The entry fee you pay is for this year’s race and covers this year’s supplies, fees, insurance, etc.
The best thing to do is to get a refund if the race fills.
Transfers
I DO NOT allow race entries to be sold or transferred to anyone. This is a liability issue.
If you are out running the race and get hurt and can’t communicate with us, I have no idea who you are, who to contact, etc.
Plus it has the potential to really screw up results.
The best thing to do is to get your refund if the race is full and have your friend just sign up for the race.
