50 Miler

Start to Yellow Fork Aid - 7.8 miles +1,190/-937 ft
This first section is the warmup. Nice flowy single track trails that are wide enough to allow passes because nothing is worse than a conga line of runners. You will be rewarded to an amazing sunrise over the Wasatch Mountains as you traverse along this ridge. Enjoy it, the next stretch is when the real fun begins.

Butterfield Peak Aid - 9.5 miles +3,684/-1,571 f
Brace yourself, this is a beast. Bring plenty of hydration and dig in for a climb. You will wind your way up this long stretch of dirt road being rewarded with incredible views of the Wasatch Mountains and Utah Lake. Finally you will top out on Butterfield Peak. Begin a steep descent to the Butterfield Peak Aid and celebrate the hardest stretch being over.

Mine Overlook - 5.0 miles +1,191/-1,191 ft
This section may appear dull due to being 100% dirt road but you will be rewarded with great views on your way up to the turn around. At the turn around you will be reward to the best view of all. You will be able to peer into the largest man made mine in the world. It is a beautiful view and one of a kind experience. Take a few minutes for this view, it is worth it.

Yellow Fork Aid - 9.5 miles +1,571/-3,684 ft
Back up and over Butterfield Peak. Enjoy those views one last time before you start your long long descent back down. As long as your quads can take it you will make great time on this section. The dirt road you take back down offers great vistas and easy running miles until you reach the next aid station. Welcome back to the Yellow Fork party!

Yellow Fork Loop - 10.9 miles +2,391/-2,391 ft
Hands down the most scenic section of the course overall. This loop has everything, great views, amazing foliage, flowy trails, and punchy climbs. Start up the Big Rock trail, loop begins on the Horsin' Around trail where you will climb up and over a pass to reach arguably the most pretty area of the course, the Rio Escondido trail.

From here you climb up onto the ridges and hit the high point of the loop at Breccia Knob. Grab your wrist band and finish out the loop. Enjoy one last section of the Big Rock Trail before you make your way back down Rose Canyon Road to the aid station.

Finish - 7.8 miles +937/-1,190 ft
Do not underestimate this section due to the lower amount of elevation gain or how great it felt in the morning. You are now much more tired and this last stretch will push you. Bring plenty of water from the aid station. You will finish the last couple of miles on the beautiful and shaded Butterfield Canyon trails giving you that extra push to finish this race strong and hopefully smiling.

Aid Stations

Aid stations will have Tailwind (caffeine and non caffeine), water, Honey Stinger gels/waffles, fruit, coke/ginger ale, and an assortment of whatever looks good at Costco that the race director wants an excuse to eat. This usually at least includes chips, candy, rice krispies, hostess products, trail mix, granola bars, and uncrustables.

Butterfield Aid Station for the 50 miler has extremely limited parking. Crew are not allowed at this aid station and will be asked to leave. Our permits depend on it.

Yellow Fork Aid Station for the 50 miler, 50k, and 33k located at the Yellow Fork Trailhead has plenty of parking. Crew are welcome to come hang out with us at the aid station and cheer you on.

Pacers and Drop Bags

Pacers are allowed for the 50 miler only beginning at the Yellow Fork Aid Station wen they come in the second time at mile 31.6.

One drop bag is allowed at Butterfield Peak Trailhead for 50 mile runners. They hit this aid station twice.

One drop bag is allowed at Yellow Fork Aid Station for ALL runners. 50 milers hit this aid three times. 50k and 30k hit this aid twice.

Please see course map on website for more details.

Drop bags need to be brought to start of race Saturday morning. We will NOT take them at check in Friday.

We will bring drop bags back to the finish line every couple of hours. You must place your drop bag in the bin we will have set out letting us know you are finished using it. If you do not do this you will have to either wait until after 7 pm when the aid station closes or drive to the aid station (15 minutes from finish) and retrieve the bag yourself. This bin will be located at the exit of the aid station as you leave for finish line.

Please be reasonable on drop bag size. Don't be that person who shows up looking like you are at the airport.

Navigation

Course is marked with pink flags, ribbons, signs, and trail marshals. The flagging will come before, during, and after the turn. This flagging will be on the same side of the trail as the turn. For example, a right turn will have flagging on the right side of the trail before and after the right turn.

We will only mark turns, trail changes or areas we feel need it. If you come to an intersection or see a trail branching off the main trail and there are no flags stay on the same trail and continue straight. This course will be well marked

*We will have trail marshals, signs, and cones directing runners at the Yellow Forks Aid station due to this being two aid stations. Makes it easy for your friends and family to cheer you on!

About Us

At Happy Trails Running we focus on a beautiful course and an amazing experience. We want our races to be events that runners look forward to every year. We believe in quality over quantity which is why we cap all races at 300 or less participants. This lets us hold races in unique areas that would be off limits to a large race due to parking and trail capacity.

We also believe in keeping everything local. This enables us to both support our community but also keep costs down. We want our races to be simple, affordable, and convenient for runners. You won't find huge expos at our races, just local businesses, friends, and family having a great time!

If there is anything we can do to improve your experience with our races please reach out to us. We are always trying to improve our events. Your feedback, what you liked and did not like, is the best way to achieve this.

Our courses will not focus on setting PR's with mostly downhill running but instead on enjoying all of the beautiful trails the Wasatch Mountains have to offer. We hope our races will make lasting memories and experiences for all of our runners.

If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you!

We hope to see you at the races or on the trails. Until then, Happy Trails!
