Hello Linganore Runners!

Mike and I look forward to seeing everyone have fun and run well next Sunday 9/27/20 at the 5th annual Linganore Winecellars Cross Country Classic!!! We should have about 50-60 total participants this year. Of course this year is a little “special” due to the coronavirus pandemic so we will all work together to stay safe and healthy during and after the event.

Please read the notes below which include additional health and safety precautions we will be taking this year:

Please self screen for potential symptoms before coming to the event – prior to joining us runners need to conduct a COVID symptom assessment the week before the race, the night before the race and the morning of the race. Symptoms include the following:
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fever
- Chills
- Muscle Pain
- Sore Throat
- Loss of taste or smell

If you are unable to attend the event due to symptoms or need to self-isolate in accordance with CDC, state or your local guidelines, we’d be happy to defer your entry fee to the 2021 event. Just send us an email at to let us know if you would like to defer your entry.

Course conditions: Remember this is a true cross country course with rolling hills on grassy fields, vineyard rows, and single track trail through the woods. So enjoy the beautiful scenery, but watch your footing and think about pacing yourself early - especially for the half marathon and 10 mile. The course should be in good shape, but the grass may be slick with dew in the early hours. So bringing a towel and perhaps dry socks and shoes for after the race is recommended.

Race Start/Finish, Parking, and Packet Pickup Location: 13601 Glissans Mill Road Mt. Airy, MD 21771. Look for the sign for both Linganore Winecellars and Red Shedman Brewery.

Packet Pickup Times: At the winery on Saturday afternoon at 4:00-5:00PM (outside the wine tasting room at one of the small tables) and also on race morning Sunday starting at 7:15AM (small signs will point you to the runner parking area and the start/finish area for packet pick-up). Online registration is still open until Friday evening so tell your friends and family to get off the couch and come join you! Online registration is strongly preferred, but we will also have limited late registration available during Saturday afternoon packet pick-up and on race morning (cash or check only please if you register in person). All runners please bring and wear your face coverings during check in & packet pickup, and also any time you are in the start/finish area prior to lining up for your start time.

Social Distancing and Face Coverings: all staffed stations (bib pick-up, aid stations, start/finish race director station) will be clearly marked with signage and ground markers reminding runners of social distancing requirements, and marks on the tables to indicate required separation between runners and staff/volunteers. All race staff and volunteers will wear disposable gloves, face shields, and face masks. Hand sanitizer and wipes will be available at each station. Each runner will stop by tables in the start/finish area to pick up their race bib with safety pins attached. Each bib will be clearly marked with the runner’s name and be spaced alphabetically so runners can find their bib by sight and only touch their own bib. Markings on the ground approaching the tables will clearly indicated 6’ spacing required between runners as they line up to get their bib.

Start Line: To allow for social distancing at the start and initial stretch of the course, the race will have four runners start each minute starting at the planned start time for that distance (8am for the half, 8:15am for the 10 mile, 8:30am for the 5 mile). Every runner’s specific start time will be recorded to ensure that the finish time for each runner is accurately posted after the race.

Aid Stations: To almost completely eliminate interaction between race volunteers and runners only water and Gatorade will be provided at aid stations in individual serving sizes. Runners will pick up their own drink – volunteers will not hand drinks to runners.

Finish Line: Runners will pick up their finisher awards from a table in the finish area where they will be spaced out by a volunteer for individual contact. Individual size containers of refreshments (8oz chocolate milk, cans/bottle of soda/energy drinks, snack bars) may also be available at the finish area tables for pick up.

Race Start Times: Half Marathon at 8:00AM, 10 Miler at 8:15, 5 Miler at 8:30AM

Parking: There is plenty of parking at the winery very close to the race start/finish.

Miscellaneous: Runners are welcome to leave a drop bag and/or car keys at the start/finish aid station. There will be several port-o-lets available for runners to use as needed before the race and on each loop near the race start/finish. The half marathoners (who start first) will initially run a 5K (3.1mile) loop and then all runners (half marathon, 10 mile,5 mile) will all be using the same 5 mile length course to complete their events. All 21 and older race entrants who run in the event will receive a free Linganore wine tasting coupon to enjoy after the race or on a future visit. In addition to the great finisher award each finisher will receive, we will have a special award for the top male and female for each distance.

Weather: as of now the weather looks very good for race morning! Little chance of any rain with mid-50’s at start time (perhaps about 60F with temps rising to a high in the mid-70’s in the afternoon)

Linganore - fun running through the winery

UPDATE as of August 12th - THE RACE IS ON!!! The fifth annual Linganore Winecellars Cross Country Classic will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2020. Three distances, 5 mile, 10 mile, and Half Marathon will utilize a scenic 5 mile loop course through the vineyards, fields and surrounding wooded areas. This is a true cross country course with rolling and challenging hills - the running surface is a mix of grassy fields and single track trail through the wooded areas. The Half Marathon will start at 8:00AM, the 10 Mile will start at 8:15AM, and the 5 Mile will start at 8:30AM.
