THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED
IMPORTANT COVID-19 UPDATES
UPDATE: August 9, 2020
Due to the restrictions laid out by Jefferson County and the City of Lakewood, unfortunately we are unable to hold The Bear Chase Trail Race on September 26-27. Even after a successful Chase the Moon on July 31 where we implemented new COVID safety protocol and logistics which ensured a safe and fun event for everyone, that was not deemed to be enough of a positive factor by government officials. Our plan for The Bear Chase called for mandatory physical distancing and face coverings at the Start/Finish and aid stations, assigned starting times for each runner, setting up an extended rolling start line to spread everyone out immediately on the race course. Even with those planned measures, we still would have been forced to cap the event at 140 runners max (also accounting for staff/volunteers), which for an event that hosted 700 runners in 2019, simply was not an option. We didn’t feel it would be fair to only allow some runners to attend while denying the rest, nor did we want to strip down the event so much that it would be devoid of the polished experience that our runners have enjoyed since 2010.
I know how frustrating it must be to receive this news, and believe me that I share in that frustration. We have the plan, ability and track record to deliver another safe, healthy and fantastic Bear Chase experience for everyone, but the powers that be won’t give us the green light to do that job. Even more frustrating, is that this is the second race in The Bear Chase Race Series we’ve had to cancel this year after cancelling North Fork 50 in the spring. (Thankfully Chase the Moon and Rock Hawk are held in Douglas County.) Additionally, I’m not the kind of person to throw in the towel easily, and will always do everything possible to deliver a good event, as even the massive flood of 2013 that flooded the majority of Bear Creek Lake Park couldn’t keep us from holding The Bear Chase that year, on a modified course.
We’re working on rollover/refund options for those of you who registered and paid for your registration, so look for an E-mail in upcoming days with more information. Those of you who had been on the waitlist, your credit card was never charged. If you’re still looking to race, be sure to sign up for Rock Hawk in Castle Rock, as that is set to happen in person on September 5. The Half Marathon, 10K and 5K will be capped at 250 runners so reserve you spot before the race fills up. Additionally, there’s still almost a month left in THE Virtual Colorado Trail Challenge, so grab some friends to put together a relay team, or go big and go solo to do the 500 miles yourself.
