Race has been relocated to Pennypack Park, 8750 Pine Road, Philadelphia
due to damage to Wissahickon park caused by hurricane Ida
When hurricane Ida hit our area about 2 weeks ago, it was clear to us, that there might be substantical damage to the
trails at Wissahickon Park, which will possibly force us to postpone the race.
So we were notified by the city, that the trails at Wissahickon are not available to us for the race (except forbidden drive, which we do not want
to use to stage a true trail race).
We started to work on a plan B immediately, because after going virtual last year due to Covid, postponing the race
was really the absolute last resort. We also recognize that you all trained hard to get ready for the race, so it is important to us, not to leave any stone unturned
to make sure you all get the opportunity to put your fitness to the test.
The good news is, that our plan B got approved, which is to relocate the race to Pennypack Park. Pennypack Park is another great park within
the Philadelphia Park system and home to the Dirty German Trail race in May. The trails at Pennypack Park are available and we will work on them the next few weeks to improve them
further to get them ready for raceday. The layout for the course is already 90% done. Fantastic trails, some of the trails you may remember
from the Dirty German race, but the majority of the course is new.
While we are disappointed, that we can not run at Wissahickon, there are benefits to relocating to Pennypack.
The start finish area is much nicer, its a wide open meadow next to Pennypack Creek, which allows all our runners to bring a 10x10 canopy and setup a basecamp.
Many runners bring friends and family to hang out at the start/finish , which is also the halfway point for the marathon to cheer for the runners.
Also, unlike Wissahickon park, the new location allows us to bring a full kitchen setup to feed all the runners post race, so we will have 2 chefs
on location to spoil you after the race.
Don Bitterlich (aka Uberhans) will entertain you with his accordion in the morning and Scott Samuels will rock the guitar in the afternoon.
So, we are excited to present to you the 2021 Philadelphia Trail (half)Marathon.
Simply keep in mind, new location Pennypack Park, 8750 Pine Road, Philadelphia.
Keep on running
P.S. You will receive another email with all the other important info about 8 days before race day.
Wissahickon Valley park is the crown jewel of the Philadelphia park system. It is over 2000 acres is size and features more than 50 miles of trails. The park combines natural beauty and history, with many historic buildings and bridges located within the park. Philadelphia trail runners have embraced the park for many years for their training runs, due to its natural beauty and extensive trail network, but there hasn't been a long distance trail race in recent memory. Let's celebrate Philadelphia trails by running the Philadelphia Trail (Half)Marathon at the Wissahickon Valley Park. Over 600 runners have registered for the race in 2020, and we expect more than 800 runners in 2021. We are looking forward seeing you at the starting line in 2021.
